Martin Scorsese will direct The Snowman

Martin Scorsese has added a new project to his upcoming agenda, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming the Oscar-winning helmer will direct a forthcoming adaptation of crime thriller The Snowman .

Written by Norweigian author Jo Nesbo, the book is the seventh in a series of detective novels featuring hard-bitten gumshoe Harry Hole, a committed boozer with an authority problem.

The Snowman charts a particularly grisly series of murders that begin when a young boy finds his mother’s scarf tied around the neck of one the titular snowmen. A serial killer is believed to have claimed her as his latest victim, and Hole must set about tracking him down.

Scandinavian crime drama is red-hot at the moment, what with the success of The Killing as well as the omnipresent Millenium trilogy, so it should come as no surprise to hear that Nesbo’s bestselling franchise is getting the big-screen treatment. Scorsese is a interesting choice to direct, and it will be intriguing to see how he approaches a straightforward thriller such as this one.

The Snowman is thought to be the next project on Scorsese’s already packed slate, pushing back The Wolf Of Wall Street , The Irishman , Silence , The Gambler and an as-yet untitled biopic of Frank Sinatra. He’s going to need a bigger diary…
