Get Smart spies the top of the US box office

It was the battle of the blockbuster comedies across the pond this weekend as the big-budget adaption of cult spy comedy Get Smart faced off against Mike Myers’ latest creation, The Love Guru. Neither Warner Bros nor Paramount would blink on the date and in the end… It was Smart by a mile. The Steve Carell-starring comedy well and truly trounced Myers’ critically loathed new release, with Get Smart nabbing the top spot and an expectation-defying $39.1 million.

The next two places were a virtual tie between Kung Fu Panda and The Incredible Hulk, as the martial arts mammal nabbed $21.7 million compared to the green meanie’s $21.5 million. The Panda is already way past $150 million while the Hulk is now at $96.4 million. That meant The Love Guru had to settle for a very disappointing fourth place, with just $14 million in ticket sales. We don’t expect great word of mouth for this one…

The Happening sank two places to fifth, taking in $10 million, while Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull settled in the middle of the charts with $8.4 million and $290 million in the US alone. At seventh, You Don’t Mess With The Zohan added to its modest success, getting up to $84 million.

Eighth place belonged to Sex And The City, which made $6.4 million this weekend, while Iron Man slipped down to ninth, with its running total cresting past $300 million. Finally, at 10th, The Strangers continues to be a surprise hit, adding $1.9 million to its $49 million total.
