SILENT HILL 2 (PS2, 2001)
The endings
If the ‘normal’ endings weren’t bizarre and fuzzy enough, Silent Hill 2 spits even more oddness in the face of convention with two novelty scenes: the Dog and UFO endings. As for the Dog finale, well, it’s certainly barking, as lead character James Sunderland discovers that his entire experience is actually an elaborate videogame being operated by a pooch.
Huh?!
Well, James is obviously a little distraught, considering that A DOG HAS JUST PUT HIM THROUGH HELL FOR CANINE KICKS. So much so that he falls to his knees and starts speaking in Japanese. The dog, at least, strolls over to give the poor fella a nuzzle.
Also, there’s the UFO ending, only available in the budget re-release of the game. It stars Harry Mason – the lead from the first game – and an army of B-movie aliens, and proves to be one of Silent Hill 2’s jolliest closures.
