It's been a few years since the revived Star Trek cinematic universe split fans in two with its unique reimagining of key events. Whether you loved Star Trek Into Darkness, or were a smidge disappointed, it's time to focus on the franchise's future in Star Trek Beyond. Dubbed a "story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun" by co-writer and star Simon Pegg, the third reboot intends to serve up a rollicking good time for Trekkies by honouring the original series on its 50th anniversary. And that includes a modified version of the USS Enterprise.
During a visit to the set, Entertainment Tonight spoke with some of the cast members while revealing new glimpses at the crew's iconic starship. Chris Pine's tour of the amoury reveals an updated phaser design, a contrast to the shabby chic of the Enterprise years into the crew's mission. “On this one [the bridge], it looks like there’s been aging," explains Karl Urban, who plays Bones, "We’re two years into the mission, so there’s wear and tear on the ship.”
One element that's received a spiffy new update is the team's uniforms. Homaging the original series, the crew's threads are a retro-modern style that includes the classic Starfleet logo fans will recognise from the show's initial run.
Aside from those cheeky nods - and the devastation sighted in the first trailer- there's little else we know of the actual plot. Could it perhaps be an effort to avoid the Khan issue from 2013?
Directed by Justin Lin, written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, and starring Chris Pine, Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Idris Elba, Anton Yelchin and Zoe Saldana, Star Trek Beyond arrives in UK and US cinemas on July 22, 2016.
