After weeks of teasing, we’ve finally got our first proper look at Jared Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad. And as we had expected, it’s quite the makeover…
We already knew Leto would be sporting a green hair / bleached skin combo, but there are a whole host of other details to set his incarnation apart from those that have gone before. From the bizarre dental grill to a host of tattoos, Leto’s Joker is probably the most visually alarming version of the character we’ve seen on the big screen.
The “haha” ink-work is a nice reference to Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke comic-book, although Leto’s look doesn’t particularly resemble any specific Joker we’ve seen before. If the aim was “unique”, they’ve certainly hit their mark… Tom Hardy, who had been lined up to play Rick Flagg before pulling out has been teasing... something interesting between Joker and Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad script he read for the part.
Directed by David Ayer and co-starring Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie nailing it as Haley Quinn and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Suicide Squad will open in the US and UK on 5 August 2016.
