Remember when Marvel and Sony finally struck a deal to include Spider-Man in the MCU? That was a glorious day for fans of the webslinger. Part of that arrangement means we'll meet this new version of the character in Captain America: Civil War, before he leaps off to headline a brand new series of Spider-Man films co-produced by both studios. It's a win-win for everybody.
And while we figured that his first solo outing might include other members of the MCU, it looks like that's now a certainty. “He is in the universe now," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige tells EW, "and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth.” Feige was reluctant to shed light on which characters Spider-Man will share the screen with, we can take a guess based on what we know so far.
You probably remember the final shot of the latest Civil War trailer when Tony Stark calls forth the newest member of his team (with the brilliant nickname of Underoos). This gives us our first clue: Spidey is a member of Team Iron Man. While the details of their relationship are still unknown it's rumored that Stark mentors Peter Parker and that's why he sides with him. It seems logical that Tony might be on hand to lend some wizened advice to the young superhero for his first standalone film. However, as Iron Man's a major figure in the MCU it's unlikely Marvel's going to send him off for a large supporting part in another studio's movie.
As for new characters? Well, again, that same argument applies. Marvel Studios already licensed off the rights to many of its comic book stalwarts, that's why Fox has dibs on the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool and Sony had Spider-Man and is still pushing forward with a Venom movie. So it seems like a long shot for us to get an 'A list' comic book character that Marvel still has the rights to showing up in a Sony film.
What do you think?
Directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, and Zendaya, the as yet untitled Spider-Man reboot will swing into cinemas on July 7, 2017.
