Developer Rebellion and publisher 505 Games have announced that Sniper Elite 3 is in development and slated for release in 2014.
Continuing the story of Sniper Elite protagonist Karl Fairburne, an OSS sniper during World War II, the title is set to launch on current and next-gen console platforms as well as PC.
Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley said: “We’ve got some great ideas to improve on what we did before and feedback from fans has been invaluable. Sniper Elite V2 was just the beginning of what we want to do with the franchise, there are things we didn’t have time to do before that we can really look at featuring this time. We want to focus on making this latest incarnation of Sniper Elite more of a sandbox game but also build on the awesome X-Ray Kill Cam and the atmospheric World War II setting.”
Last April's Xbox 360, PS3 and PC release Sniper Elite V2 sold over one million copies in 2012, according to 505 games. We said in our Sniper Elite V2 review: “Sniper Elite V2 is a prime example of how a streamlined take on a singular gaming concept can result in something great, even if it’s got a bit of clunk to it. The delivery of competent and enthralling gameplay was effective enough that the weaknesses we found were hardly roadblocks to enjoyment. It’s a gory title that’ll surprise you if you give it a shot. We still haven’t seen all the ways a bullet can kill a man yet, and we might just keep on playing until we do.”
