Despite being a dunk that's still remembered to this very day, former Sony Interactive Entertainment president Shuhei Yoshida says the PS4 game-sharing instructional video wasn't meant as a dig at Xbox.
Speaking to WhatCulture Gaming, Yoshida explained, "It was really fun. We did not want to make fun of Xbox at the time, but because they announced about their DRM and the system before we talked about PS4. So because lots of people and media were asking us questions [about] what we were doing, we tried to communicate what we were going to do in a very short form."
For those unaware, "Official PlayStation Used Game Instructional Video" saw Yoshida holding a game, saying, "This is how you share games on PS4" before a fancy "step 1: sharing the game" title card appeared, with another clip of him passing a copy of Killzone Shadow Fall to Adam Boyes, who simply says "thanks" as the video abruptly ends. This aired between Xbox's E3 2013 presentation and Sony's that same week, and with Xbox detailing its always-online focus, it was one of many easy dunks for the PS4 over Xbox One.
Of course, there's a bit of irony in returning to this video now, as fans report Sony has just implemented a 30-day DRM that forces players to go online every 30 days to renew their game licenses. It's unclear whether this was a mistake, as PlayStation support has given conflicting answers on the situation, but if this becomes the case, it's effectively the same as the original plan for the Xbox One that they – apparently unintentionally – dunked on Microsoft with 13 years ago.
