Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig confirmed for Ghostbusters reboot

We have our new Ghostbusters! After months of rumours and speculation, Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig have been confirmed as the leading phantom-hunters in Paul Feig's all-female Ghostbusters reboot.

Feig, who worked with both Wiig and McCarthy previously on Bridesmaids and The Heat, dropped the news today via his personal Twitter account.

He also confirmed the two other members of the team will be played by Saturday Night Live alumni Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

Meanwhile, HitFix claim to have landed the film's plot outline, revealing it will revolve around one-time colleagues Erin Gabler and Abby Bergman, who are estranged after penning a book together. The former is mow a college professor, while the latter has continued investigating the paranormal.

Whatever the plot turns out to be, we're already excited at the prospect of seeing McCarthy and Wiig suiting up as the titular 'busters, and with Feig promising a “scary comedy”, it'll be interesting to see the pair trying out something darker together.

“I want ours to be scarier than the original, to be quite honest,” Feig said previously. “Katie Dipold and I are so focused on wanting to do scary comedy. We don’t want to hold back.”

Nor would we want them to.

Ghostbusters opens in cinemas 22 June 2016.
