Mr Eko, working as priest in Australia, is given the task of investigating a possible miracle – a girl who has come back to life. He thinks he’s disproved it, when the girl in question seems to read his mind…
On the island
Ana-Lucia is dead (though her ghost appears to Eko) but Libby hangs on for a while, scaring Michael who thinks she might give away his betrayal. Finally, she pegs it.
Eko and Locke go off after Gale, but Eko really has other ideas (prompted by the ghost of his brother). He forces Locke to show him the location of the other hatch (revealed in the map in “Lockdown”). They find it under the crashed plane. Inside they discover a Hanso Foundation training tape which reveals that the countdown and buttonpressing is a pointless behavioural experiment – the button does nothing. Locke is gutted but Eko doesn’t believe it and takes over button pressing duties. He believes they have all been brought to the island for a reason.
Review
A rather ho hum and leisurely episode, especially considering the end of the season is coming up. The “big” revelation (another – yawn – hatch) fails to excite, while Locke’s despair and Eko’s epiphany aren’t particularly convincing. Swapping Locke and Eko as “keeper of the faith” advances the plot how, exactly? Michael remains irritatingly hard to care about (you don’t empathise with his dilemma, you just think he’s a dick) and only a few snappy Sawyer and Kate scenes liven things up.
