History is repeating itself. Just a couple of Januarys ago, I was celebrating the surprising longevity of a Spider-Man 2 PS5 bundle that seemed to defy the odds, holding onto a significant discount well after the holidays. While the freebies aren't rolling at the same level in 2026, the savings are still looking particularly hardy this new year.
We're now two weeks into January and I'm still seeing $100 discounts on both the PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Disc version at Best Buy. That's not to be taken for granted, though. The Spider-Man 2 bundles of yore disappeared from the shelves around the middle of the month, never to return. After that, savings took a good few months to return to the same level.
It certainly helps that these bundles represent the best prices I tend to see on the PS5 even during its heaviest discounts. I track the best PS5 bundle deals all year round, and $100 savings are typically reserved for major sales events.
We'll likely return to this position in the future (and if you're holding out for a bigger freebie I don't blame you), but the next shot we've got is likely Sony's Days of Play event towards the end of May.
Since PS5 prices rose last year, I've been taking every opportunity to shout about heavier discounts. The $549.99 MSRP on the main flagship console is now $50 more than the original $499.99 launch price, and the Digital Edition has risen by a whole $100.
That means this week's PS5 deals save you a good chunk of change not just on the new rate of the disc model, but on the original cost as well. That's an ideal discount, it's always a jab in the ribs when a saving doesn't even hit previous MSRPs.
The Digital Edition is looking a little shakier. That new $499.99 MSRP means this week's $100 discount only takes us back to launch day pricing, which is a kick. However, I haven't seen the console drop lower than this for some time now - and certainly not since those price increases.
Which PS5 should you buy?
The disc console represents a better deal overall this week, or at least one that feels a lot better. It's also the device I'd recommend most overall. The Digital Edition can save you $50 now, but that physical disc drive opens you up to much cheaper games further down the line. Otherwise, you're locked into PlayStation's own store pricing - with no resell value either.
By opting for the disc console you've got a whole world of cheap PS4 games to explore (or upgrade with far less expensive $10 PS5 boosts), while also keeping your ability to trade and sell your games later on. That's going to save you much more than $50 even after just a couple of platinum trophies.
