The Razer Naga V3 Pro wants to be the last gaming mouse you buy, but it comes at a price

It's been four years since Razer last upgraded its multi-tool gaming mouse, the Naga. Today, the brand has unveiled the Razer Naga V3 Pro, bringing those same three control panels to a device packed with the latest Focus Pro sensor, Gen-4 optical switches, and Gen-2 Hyperspeed wireless. Essentially, it takes the swappable side-button approach that has earned the rodent a spot among the best gaming mouse models, and upgrades the internals to sit on the same competitive shelf as the Viper V4 Pro and DeathAdder V4 Pro.

That kind of tech comes at a price, though. While the average cost of a flagship pointer has risen to $150 / $160 in the last year, the Razer Naga V3 Pro is launching at $179.99. That makes it one of the most (potentially the most) expensive regular-release gaming mouse I've seen.

$179.99 at Razer

The Razer Naga V3 Pro comes in at $179.99 / £179.99. That's a lot of cash, more than the DeathAdder V3 Pro, but it's designed as the ultimate upgrade to cater to your entire Steam library.

If you're unacquainted with the series, the Naga line is primarily pitched as a multi-genre jack of all trades. The three swappable side panels offer different control modes to suit everything from competitive FPS to macro-heavy strategy and MMO titles. They're toolless, simply snapping on and off the sides as required. We've still got the traditional array of buttons here: 12-button, six-button, and two-button side panels to swap between.

The main unit is slightly squatter than you'll typically find in a more FPS-oriented gaming mouse. That bulbous design can divide fans, but from my experience with the Razer Naga V2 Pro it retains its comfort in a claw or palm grip (provided you don't have particularly large hands for the latter). The V2 was always a little too heavy to be truly competitive, though, holding its two-button option back for FPS ranked players.

The previous generation weighed in at 134g, whereas the new model hits 117g. That's an improvement, but it's far from the 40-60g form factors of the fastest mice on the market.

So what's new here? Well, that Focus Pro sensor runs at 50K DPI with a 950 IPS tracking speed. It's the same model found in the new Viper V4 Pro, with numbers tracking higher than those of the Logitech G Pro X 2 Superstrike (the Viper's main competition). That's a blisteringly fast eye, but at this point you're getting diminishing returns from sensor specs. Most players won't move beyond 6,000 DPI, though that IPS ceiling gives you plenty of room for accurate and reliable tracking at high speeds.

The Razer Naga V3 Pro also uses Gen 4 optical switches, touted to be 12% lighter than the previous generation. The whole mouse now runs on the same high-speed wireless system as Razer's other flagships.

It's not all under the hood, though. The Naga V3 Pro brings back the ring finger button, now lockable, while also adding an extra button to the pinky rest on the right flank. When the MMO-inspired panel is attached, that gives up 23 programmable inputs to play with.

The Naga is also borrowing a feature from the Razer Basilisk line. The Basilisk V3 Pro introduced a slick smart scroll wheel, capable of automatically switching between a notched and free-spin response. That's all here, alongside two different notched 'Tactile' modes to choose from.

It looks like the Razer Naga V3 Pro is pickpocketing some of the best parts of the best Razer mice, but its value to you will entirely depend on whether you'll make the most of those swappable panels. Those who only stick to one genre can save some cash with individual Razer lines. Those investing in one gaming mouse to rule an eclectic Steam library, however, will find that $179.99 price tag easiest to swallow - though it might be worth keeping an eye on this similar rodent Duncan found at Computex.
