If you’ve gotten yourself stuck in with recent survival crafter Windrose, you may have realised that Gunpowder feels like a resource that is abundant when you don’t need it and nowhere to be found whenever you’re running low. As it becomes a critical resource in the mid-game stages, you’ll find that you burn through it quickly but luckily you can unlock the ability to craft more.
Throughout the game, you’re able to loot Gunpowder from a range of different locations. Chests in Pirate encampments typically contain Gunpowder and you can also find more through looting bodies of enemies you’ve taken down, whether they sling guns or not. Chests in point of interest locations like ruins can also contain the resource too.
However, if you’re finding that you’re still not coming across enough, then you can craft Gunpowder too but this is a recipe you only unlock as you progress to the Foothills region of the game. Here’s how to craft Gunpowder if looting just doesn’t provide enough for you.

In order to unlock the Gunpowder recipe you need to ensure you have progressed the story to the Foothills region. To be able to craft it, you need to have Millstones, which can be crafted via combining Millstone Parts (15 Stone) and Wood at a Workbench.
Next, ensure you have the correct materials in hand or in your nearby chests in order to get crafting. You need Ash and Sulfur to craft Gunpowder at a Millstone. Ash can can be picked up through burning wood in a Charcoal Kiln or grinding Charcoal at a Millstone.
You’ll find Sulfur as yellow-marbled rock nodes and deposits across the environment throughout the Foothills region similar to Clay. You must have an Iron pickaxe to mine Sulfur.
Once you’ve collected both Ash and Sulfur, you can combine both at your Millstone to produce Gunpowder. Ensure this is equipped alongside your ammo in order to use your Firearms.

Gunpowder Tips
While in the early stages of the game, focus on melee combat even if you do have access to a firearm. Enemies in these stages of the game are easier to take on in hand to hand combat or with a sword, meaning you can save your Gunpowder for essential mid game fights later in the game.
If you’re struggling to find Sulfur deposits, then you can purchase it from Natural Resources Merchants throughout the world. These can be found later on in the Foothills area.
