Subnautica 2 devs say no to killing in their survival game, modders respond with add-on that lets you shoot fish anyway
"After seeing the devs tell people it won't be coming back and it doesn't suit their vision for the game, I thought why not make it myself"
After Subnautica 2 maker Unknown Worlds tried telling people it didn't make the game so you could shoot the fish, people have modded in the ability to shoot the fish.
Over the weekend, lead game designer Anthony Gallegos said that non-violent gameplay in Subnautica is a "point of resistance that we'll get repeatedly," but assured, "we feel strongly about it." So strongly in fact, that over on the game's Discord, another dev told a fan asking why you can't kill in Subnautica 2, "We aren't a killing game. Go play Sons of the Forest or something if you want to kill."
Now, modder Domelll has released their Killable Creatures mod over on Nexusmods. The modder explains, "Getting into Subnautica 2 for the first time and then realizing they took away the ability to kill made me angry," adding, " Why take away a feature so simple, especially when it's a sandbox survival game?"
The modder continues, "After seeing the devs tell people it won't be coming back and it doesn't suit their vision for the game, I thought, why not make it myself, having experience modding other games." With the mod allowing you to bash or blast aquatic adversaries to your heart's content.
Obviously, the devs' comment didn't go down so well with some members of the community, as telling someone to go play something else is never really the vibe. But at the same time, I respect the developers' dedication to their own vision, which aims to have players create non-violent solutions to their problems. So thankfully, there's already a happy middle ground for those of you who really want to shoot the fish.
