Amphibian is the frog-core old-school RPG we all need in our lives
It's taking inspiration from the classic era of Game Boy Advance and Game Cube adventures
Obviously, the one thing the world of classic 2D turn based RPGs has been missing has been more frogs. So take a look at Amphibian, just shown off at FGS Live from Gamescom, which is all frog all the time, and promises a challenging take on the genre that's channeling games like Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, and even OG Resident Evil; while drawing inspiration from the classic era of Game Boy Advance and Game Cube RPGs.
This is a game for fans of classic console adventures full of turn-based battles and isometric exploration. When you're not fighting opposing wildlife you'll be dealing with old-school puzzles and riddles as you use a deep RPG system and branching class system to develop your heroes and party.
The story sees a frog called Sapo, and his frog allies, forced into war against invading toads as dehydration and starvation grips their pond. This is a somber, socio-political tale focusing on one family's sacrifices and suffering. It's also designed to be a more concise experience - replacing random encounters and level grinding with curated battles and intentionally limited side content.
The tactical turn-based fights see you going up against a range of animals, insects, and royal amphibians. The focus on delivering a tighter experience means there's no real grinding here, and no economy to game, forcing you to manage dwindling resources through deliberately placed encounters. So every stat and hit point matters. This is a story about dehydration and starvation after all, so it makes little sense to buy or grind your way out of trouble. It means maintaining your party's health is critical, when one blow can cause injuries and persistent debuffs.
Amphibian is currently in development for PC with a TBD release date and with console versions follow. You can find out more on the official site, X and Instagram.
