Zack Fair has an even bigger role in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, series director Naoki Hamaguchi says
Could he get a happy ending?
Zack Fair has always been one of the most important characters in Final Fantasy 7 despite being dead at the start of the game. As the Remake trilogy gets ready to end next year with Revelation, the team at Square Enix is planning on making Zack an even bigger part of the climactic finale.
Series director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed in an interview with Japanese outlet Denfaminico that Zack's screen time in Revelation is, "even greater than before." While he didn't show up that much in Remake, Zack had a big part to play in Rebirth, including several sections where he was a playable character. His inclusion in Rebirth leaned into the idea that the Remake trilogy is a multiversal story.
"The previous game depicted the existence of 'multiple timelines,' but directly stating that in words would spoil the appeal, wouldn't it?" explains Hamaguchi, "Zack plays that role again in this game" To that effect, Zack's role is to give the player a different perspective on the overarching story of the trilogy we mostly see from Cloud's point of view.
The original Final Fantasy 7 plays a lot with different perspectives on the story, hiding reveals behind unreliable narrators. With Zack ending Rebirth with a greater knowledge that there are multiple timelines, it opens up more opportunities for playing with similar themes and story beats as the original game.
Since the Remake trilogy's start, the idea that fate can be changed has loomed large. Aerith's fate was a big question in Rebirth that the game took an unexpected approach to, honoring her death in the original while showing Cloud to see visions of her after the fact. Zack is also a character whose ultimate fate seems uncertain at the moment, though there may be some hope his journey through the multiverse will end on a happier note.
Hamaguchi also states that Zack will be an, "even more important part of the gameplay experience." That could just refer to him getting more screen time but I wouldn't ignore the possibility Zack finds his way back to Cloud and company during Revelation, perhaps becoming a new party member.
