10 long years later, Until Dawn 2 has been revealed, but if you were hoping for a direct continuation of the first game from OG studio Supermassive Games, you'll be disappointed on both counts. Until Dawn 2 seems to revolve around an entirely new cast of characters, and it's in development at Firesprite, the first-party PlayStation developer behind Horizon Call of the Mountain and a handful of other VR-first titles.
PlayStation dropped the announcement trailer for Until Dawn 2 during today's State of Play showcase, revealing a group of ghost hunters who don't know they're about to become the hunted. The trailer shows the young fools partying it up at an exotic and seemingly abandoned tropical destination called Akashima Island, which of course is said to be haunted. Then Baldur's Gate 3 star Neil Newbon shows up and belly flops into a pool. "Who's the buff idiot," one ghost hunter asks. "Does no one know this guy?" another asks, possibly a wink at Newbon's household status.
From there, things take a dark turn. Notably, I didn't see any mention or sighting of a Wendigo, the former humans-turned-monsters that serve as the main bad guys of the first Until Dawn. Instead, the only antagonists shown in the reveal trailer are some masked, machete-wielding hunters, which whack off one of the characters' legs.
Assuredly, this is still an Until Dawn game. We see one extremely critical quick time event toward the end of the trailer that results in a lad named Luke falling off a cliff to his bloody death, and the trailer closes out with the reveal that the psychiatrist character from the first game is back. "Can you do what needs to be done?" he asks ominously as a 2027 release window is shown.
I'm conflicted about this one. I have extremely fond memories of the first Until Dawn and have played it and re-played it at least a dozen times, but there's no denying Supermassive quality is inconsistent at best these days. That said, Firesprite hasn't proven itself as the lead developer on a non-VR, non-mobile first-party PlayStation game, so we'll have to wait and see how that shakes out. So far, I'm liking what I see.
