Supermassive makes death in space a little easier with Directive 8020's all new Turning Points rewind system
Exclusively revealed at the Future Game Show, Turning Points takes the sting out of a bad choice
SuperMassive Games, developer behind horror classics like Until Dawn, The Quarry and the Dark Pictures series, revealed an all new feature at the Future Games Show for its next game, Directive 8020. This sci-fi tale of terror will feature a new system, called Turning Points, that will let you rewind the choices you make and try to avoid a hideous death in the vacuum of space.
As explained by creative director Will Doyle, exclusively to FGS, Turning Points are "a new narrative system which allows you to go back and change the outcome of your choices". With SuperMassive famous for decision-heavy horror, where one wrong call can spell doom for the heroes you control, this new system gives you the power to avoid death and backtrack bad choices.
"With Turning Points you can rewind to a pivotal point or decision, or see how different choices would have played out," Doyle explains. Like all SuperMassive's previous games, Directive 8020 features a branching story with multiple endings. According to Doyle, "you'll be able to track the choices and paths you've taken, and see alternate paths that link to each of the major decisions you've made".
Of course, if you want the more traditional challenge where characters live and die by your choices, there's always Survivor Mode, which prevents you from rewinding (but it still lets you view the decision tree if you want to masochistically view what you could have won when things go bad).
It sounds like a feature that might well come in useful for a game that's very much sounding like The Thing meets Alien. No Time to Die and Day of the Jackal's Lashana Lynch stars in a story about a colony ship called the Cassiopeia, that encounters a shape changing alien and must fight to survive. But, when the danger can look like anyone, who can you trust? Fortunately, thanks to Directive 8020's new Turning Points feature, if you choose poorly and want to try again after a nasty end, you can.
Directive 8020 will be out October 2, this year, on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
