Destiny 2 fans shouldn't "blame yourselves" as Bungie closes the door on its 9-year-old MMO, says community lead: "This is just the way it goes sometimes"

Now that Destiny 2 is receiving its final update as Bungie ends the sci-fi MMO's nine-year reign, some fans can't help but wonder whether they could've somehow supported the game more and "save" it – but one Bungie lead says no.

It's not the fault of players that Destiny 2 is coming to its end, after all. Dylan "dmg04" Gafner, the principal communications manager at Bungie, confirms as much while responding to a content creator worried they could've done "more" to contribute to the game's success.

"'Could I do more?' You all have done more for this game and our studio than could ever be imagined, and no words can accurately depict how lucky we are to have shared these worlds with you," says Gafner.

The community lead continues, reassuring fans that the MMO reaching the end of its line has nothing to do with them or their supposed lack of support. "Don't blame yourselves or think you could have / should have done more," he writes. "This is just the way it goes sometimes. No matter the future, we will always have these memories. Thank you. For everything."

It's a bittersweet, heartfelt reply – and others seem to agree.

"It's gonna be a weird world without Destiny," one comment reads. Another adds, "Destiny will always have a very special place in my heart. Thank you for all the memories I made in the many years I have played this game for. I hope to see you back with [a] new project soon."

I'll stop there because I'll tear up otherwise, but it's evident that the community feels two things: sad about Destiny 2's end and grateful the MMO was around as long as it was. The game will remain playable for now, at least, but it won't be getting any further major updates.

There's no telling what the future holds, though. Bungie is still working on Marathon, its recent extraction shooter – and it appears to be going well enough, even if its popularity hasn't been immense.

It's disappointing to know Destiny 3 likely isn't happening any time soon, but I suppose anything is possible.

Destiny 2 devs repeatedly pitched a dating sim, Bungie veterans say, "but leadership was very Hard No that nobody wanted romance or silliness."
