The first-person perspective CD Projekt Red employs in Cyberpunk 2077 works pretty well – and a large reason why, according to Cyberpunk 2 creative director Igor Sarzyński, has to do with the game's overarching narrative design.
It's difficult to grapple with the first-person perspective if you're used to other games like The Witcher 3, in which you view things from a third-person point of view, but Sarzyński thinks it was the best option for Cyberpunk 2077.
"Purely from narrative design POV, I think subjective FPP works well with '77 story, genre, and world," Sarzyński says in a Bluesky post According to the developer, it pairs nicely with the whole… you know, being V thing.
Also there's a digital ghost in your head that only you can see; a thing existing only in your subjective perception - rather than both of you being seen equally by an external, objective TPP cam.

"You're a mind trapped in a decaying body with only means of leaving it being through technological consciousness processing (cyberspace; soulkiller; projection into external devices; braindaces)," as Sarzyński puts it. "Also, there's a digital ghost in your head that only you can see; a thing existing only in your subjective perception – rather than both of you being seen equally by an external, objective TPP cam."
That doesn't mean a third-person perspective never works. In fact, there are plenty of games and characters that it does mesh well with. Sarzyński notes The Witcher 3, God of War, and The Last of Us as examples.
"Generalizing, imho, TPP is better for more defined characters – Geralt, Kratos, Ellie – where you play-replay someone else's story. FPP lends itself to more avatar-like player characters." V is "somewhere in the middle of this spectrum."

He restates, however, that he feels first-person "was better for '77" – and, no, that doesn't mean anything about Cyberpunk 2 or what perspective it might feature. "This is about a specific narrative setup of Cyberpunk 2077," Sarzyński stresses.
