Equipping a Battlefield 6 gas mask is very simple as you just need to hold your Class gadget input, but a bug is preventing many players from being able to do so. That's a rather big problem as parts of the new Contaminated map are often covered in clouds of hallucinatory VL-7 gas, causing you to see and hear soldiers that aren't really there. Gas masks let you safely enter these areas without having visions so it's important that you at least know how to equip a gas mask in Battlefield 6, even if you can't currently do so.
How to put on a gas mask in Battlefield 6
To equip a gas mask in Battlefield 6, you need to hold either D-Pad Up if you're using a controller or the X key if you're on mouse and keyboard.
In other words, you need to hold down whatever button you have set for using a Class gadget in Battlefield 6, such as the supply bag or repair tool, to put on or remove a gas mask. If you're one of the unlucky few that can't equip a Battlefield 6 gas mask, this is unfortunately a bug, but the development team is aware of it, so hopefully a hotfix is inbound soon.
With a gas mask donned, you won't suffer the hallucinatory effects caused by being in a cloud of VL-7 gas, but your view will be restricted with a thick, black vignette around your screen – the gas is only on a select few Battlefield 6 maps with it being a key feature of Contaminated. All players start with one gas mask but can get more by standing near Battlefield 6 Support resupply bags and can hold up to five at once. Although, you don't need to worry about equipping a gas mask in an enclosed vehicle.
While wearing a gas mask and standing in a VL-7 cloud, you'll notice that the HUD icon empties over time, representing the durability of your mask's filter, preventing you from safely staying in a gas cloud. If the icon empties fully, you will consume one of your gas masks and automatically switch to a new one, assuming you have any spare.
However, if you have only one gas mask and your filter degrades fully, your gas mask will stop working and you'll start hallucinating as though you were not wearing a mask at all. But, as soon as you remove your mask, the filter will start regenerating, and you'll be able to put it back on shortly after. Just be aware of how much time you're spending in VL-7 gas so as not to chew through all your gas masks.
