First official image of Ben Whishaw as Q in Skyfall

Ben Whishaw has been attached to Skyfall for some time now, and the rumours that he’d be playing old favourite Q have been confirmed with a new official image.

The character, made a famous fixture of Bond history by actor Desmond Llewelyn, supplies 007 with his gadgetry. Presumably that means Daniel Craig will have some new toys to play with, after the gritty tone of his previous two movies stripped him of laser watches and invisible cars.

Whishaw’s an extremely talented actor who’s been great in projects as diverse as Perfume: The Story Of A Murder and cult TV comedy Nathan Barley and, depending on how the events of Skyfall pan out, this’ll likely be a role he continues further into the franchise.

Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in an official statement, “It’s a real thrill to confirm the return of Q in Skyfall ™ played by the enormously talented, Ben Whishaw. We are delighted to have this beloved character back in the series.”

Skyfall is directed by Sam Mendes, and also stars Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, and, of course, Daniel Craig. It opens on 26 October 2012.
