Spider-Man: Brand New Day has finally swung into theaters this week, and naturally, now that the film has rolled credits (and with a chin-scratching post-credits scene to boot), the latest chapter of Tom Holland’s wall-crawling alter-ego has sparked some questions that might not have been answered in the movie.
One plot thread that feels like it was left dangling involves the villain of the movie, or, more importantly, the ones responsible for creating this movie’s villain. Naturally, to discuss this further, we’re going to have to go into very intense spoiler territory, but chances are, if you’ve made it this far, you’re happy to join us. Ready? Well, here we go then.
At the end of the film, Spidey (Tom Holland) manages to talk Jean Grey (Sadie Sink) down from a telepathic ledge and assures her that even though her sister Sara is gone, she’s still got a new friend who has her back. Unfortunately, this revelation comes at the cost of Peter Parker removing his mask to talk to the telepath, thereby exposing himself to everyone nearby in his eyeline, including Damage Control head William Metzger (Tramell Tillman).
And then nothing. The film never addresses this minor issue; instead, the secret that Peter Parker is Spider-Man remains known to only a select few. What gives? How has Pete’s secret identity remained intact? Well, fans already think they have the answer.
Over on Reddit, a fan broke down everyone who now knows Spidey and Peter are the same person, which includes: MJ (Zendaya), Ned (Jacob Batalon), Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), and potentially Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). In the case of Metzger and the hospital staff who work to keep Spidey alive at the end of the movie, though, another Redditor who had seen the movie settled on a simple get-out. “If Jean were able to fully control her powers, she could erase the memory of Peter Parker's identity from anyone who had seen him or knew who he really was.”
It seems the most obvious route to take, even if it wasn’t in the film. Perhaps after all the chaos and conspiracy that had unraveled, Jean did Spidey a favor so he didn’t have to spend yet another movie checking in on who and who doesn’t know about his heroic activities. Who knows? Maybe Sink returns in Avengers: Secret Wars, as is rumored, and we get some answers as to how Jean got away so easily.
