Spider-Man: Brand New Day hit the big screen last week, and with it, finally revealed who Sadie Sink is playing. But now that the cat is out of the bag, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige says Sink's mutant is set to play a major role in the MCU going forward.
"Sadie’s character is one that our fans know has immense significance within the Marvel Universe, and she plays a key role in the future of the MCU," said Feige to Variety. "I’m just happy that the secret is finally out and that Sadie can stop dodging the question."
As many fans predicted, Sink plays Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The X-Man is one of the most powerful heroes in Marvel comics, with telepathic and telekinetic powers that allow her to control others and manipulate objects from buildings right down to molecular levels. The hero has shown up a number of times in live-action, played by Famke Janssen in the original X-Men trilogy, and then by Sophie Turner in the X-Men prequel films.
It sounds as though Sink's Grey is here to stay, but it is not clear when we will see her again. However, we can probably guess that Grey will be part of the upcoming X-Men movie from Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier. The project has reportedly already cast Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, but Marvel has yet to reveal any official casting details.
It doesn't look like Sink will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, nor will Tom Holland's Spidey. But Feige revealed that Brand New Day "leads into another very well-known Marvel franchise created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby." Could that be the new X-Men movie? Well, among many other Marvel franchises, X-Men was created by Lee and Kirby.
When asked why Marvel decided to keep Sink's role a secret, Feige said, "It’s purely about creating the best possible opening weekend experience for the audience." Well, it looks like it paid off. Brand New Day had an unbelievable opening weekend, earning a staggering $932 million worldwide, marking the biggest domestic opening ever in the US. Brand New Day has a long way to go before beating Avengers: Endgame's massive $2.79 billion total gross, but it is getting there.
