The novel focuses on Henry Lytten, an Oxford-based spy-turned-academic and writer in 1962. He creates Jay, an 11-year-old boy who's grown up in an idyllic fantasy world, but has a life-changing supernatural vision that causes Jay to question the rules of his world. In another of his creations, a society dominated by technology toys with the science of time travel. And in the real world, one of Lytten's old intelligence colleagues draws him back for one last assignment. As these disparate worlds interact, the question is – who's really in control of the characters' lives?
