Tuesdays news round-up: Kirk, Who, Sarah Jane and heroes in a half shell

Chris Pine became the frontrunner to squeeze into Captain Kirk’s yellow sweater last week, and now he’s been all-but-confirmed as the new captain of the Enterprise. Director Joe Carnahan, who had Pine lined up to star in his James Ellroy adaptation White Jazz, said on his blog that the actor has opted to become the next William Shatner. If this proves to be true, then JJ Abrams just has to find a Dr McCoy – Lord of the Rings’ Karl Urban is the current favourite.

Doctor Who’s picked up yet more award nominations, this time at the National TV Awards. The show’s up for Most Popular Drama, while David Tennant and Freema Agyeman are nominated for Best Actor and Actress, respectively. The SF flag is also being flown by Life on Mars, which is competing against Who for Most Popular Drama. You can see a full list of nominations over at Digital Spy .

Digital Spy ’s also reporting that a second series of The Sarah Jane Adventures could be on the way. Apparently Sarah Jane herself, Elisabeth Sladen, has revealed that another outing is being written and planned: “As always with these things they’ve not had the greenlight yet, but it all looks very hopeful I think.”
