According to a report by Entertainment Weekly , Sony are still pressing ahead with development of The Girl Who Played With Fire , the sequel to the US remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo .

EW
have had word from a Sony rep that “[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book,” after having been previously told by Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal that Fire was ‘definitely a go’, with a late-2013 release date earmarked.

Dragon Tattoo has so far taken $60m in the US, which is decent (if unexceptional) business, especially for a film with such defiantly adult subject matter.

According to EW ’s contact, screenwriter Steve Zaillian is working on the Fire script as planned. Stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are contractually committed to sequels, although director David Fincher hasn’t yet signed on.

In a recent interview, Fincher revealed that, if he was to sign on, he’d want to shoot the sequels ( Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest ) back to back.

Fincher also called Zaillian’s Fire script “really good.”

While we wouldn’t be surprised if Fincher was reluctant to lock himself into a franchise, it’d be nice to see his take on the remainder of the Millennium trilogy.

His Dragon Tattoo may have suffered due to the proximity of the already-very-good Swedish film, but there’s plenty of room for improvement when it comes to the later two books, which were adapted into perfunctory, albeit entertaining, thrillers.

And, really, who doesn’t want to see Mara don the black garb and body art again?
