Groundbreaking actioner Mad Max: Fury Road has been in theatres less than a week, and already George Miller’s return to the arid post-apocalyptic landscape has been heralded as the savior of modern cinema. With widespread acclaim from critics (check out our glowing five-star review) and fans alike, the film has sparked a lot of talk regarding potential sequels.
And while the man himself has dropped word on a series of Mad Max-related projects across the years, he’s recently offered an update on the next instalment. "We've got one screenplay and a novella,” Miller said on during his stint on The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith podcast. “It happened because with the delays [on Fury Road] and writing all the backstories, they just expanded." He goes on to unveil the title for the next chapter in the road warrior’s tale will be Mad Max: The Wasteland.
While he doesn’t delve into specifics it’s interesting to note how this diverges from his previous talk on the matter. During production on Fury Road he offered up the Mad Max: Furiosa title which was then slated to be the follow-up. Whether this change may be a result of Charlize Theron’s interest in returning to reprise her badass role or merely the direction the story took, one star is almost certainly set to return. Mr. Rockatansky himself, Tom Hardy, recently confirmed his contractual obligation to a further three movies should Fury Road be a success. Sounds like we’ll be seeing more adventures from that dusty landscape, then.
