XBLA Summer of Arcade 2011 release dates announced

After last week’s combo of big titles like Shadows of the Damned and FEAR 3, it looks like gaming is entering its annual summer drought of retail releases. There are still promising smaller games like Catherine, El Shaddai, and Earth Defense Force coming out, but the retail release schedule doesn’t really heat up until Madden 12 at the end of August. Fortunately Microsoft’s fourth annual Summer of Arcade is headed to Xbox Live to energize the next couple months, and we now have the full release schedule for all five games.

July 20

Price: 1200 Microsoft Points

First up is Bastion, an action-RPG with anime-inspired visuals that turned many heads at E3. Will it start things off with a bang? Preview

July 27

From Dust

Price: 1200 Microsoft Points

We’ve been enamored with From Dust aka Project Dust for some time now, so we’re hoping this special distinction will convince the rest of the gaming public how right we are. Preview

August 3

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

Price: 1200 Microsoft Points

This one looks to fall in the Braid/Limbo category of XBLA titles, at least visually, though can it hook us as well? With lovely 2D visuals and a very unique aesthetic, we expect big things. Preview

August 10

Fruit Ninja Kinect

Price: 800 Microsoft Points

There had to be a Kinect game in here somewhere. Though Fruit Ninja can be pretty addicting on phones, can the simple slicing motion be just as engrossing on a TV screen?

August 17

Toy Soldiers: Cold War

Price: 1200 Microsoft Points

The promotion ends with a sequel to last year’s surprise hit Toy Soldiers. With a cute take on warfare and adding some much needed action to the Tower Defense genre, the original was a great time. Can the sequel measure up?

Lastly, if you purchase all those games, you get a free copy of XBLA title Crimson Alliance when it’s released September 7. Previous years have offered straight up MS points as a bonus, but a free game is nothing to sneeze at.

ITSP and Dust seem like winners in my book. Fruit Ninja needs tactile feedback and yeah I don't think it will be fun waving your arms around like an idiot, but hey I'm not the target audience apparently. Loved Toy Soldiers so I'm interested in Cold War as well.

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet! Gah! I absolutely cannot wait to finally get my claws on this!
  • darkpigraph - June 28, 2011 11:14 a.m.

Is From Dust going to a timed exclusive for XBLA or can we expect it on PSN on that day too?
  • FattyTuna - June 28, 2011 7:49 a.m.

Weird, I thought more people would be interested in Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. I'm looking forward to seeing the reviews for these titles.
  • nomnom52 - June 28, 2011 5:23 a.m.

@Errbo: $15 is still a great price for some of the games out there. For example, BG&E HD was amzingly awesome for the 1200 points I spent on it. Can't wait for when I get Xbox Live back on, so that I can get From Dust.
  • AGENTJORRRG - June 28, 2011 3:53 a.m.

From Dust has looked good for a while now! Lets keep fingers crossed.
  • Errrrbo - June 28, 2011 2:03 a.m.

15 dollars has become the new standard, which is why I don't buy games on XBLA anymore.
  • ObliqueZombie - June 28, 2011 1:56 a.m.

No Warhammer 40k? D: I'm very much looking forward to that joystick shoot-'em-up.

Ugh, such a long wait for Cold War Toy Soldiers, hopefully From Dust can hold me over until that gets released.
  • taterboob - June 28, 2011 3:53 a.m.

With nothing along the calibur of a Shadow Complex or Limbo this year, the lineup is looking kind of "meh". For now, I'll just save my magic space bucks for Journey on PSN, whenever that comes out.
  • FoolyCoolyKid - June 27, 2011 9:20 p.m.

First three weeks are going to set me back $45.00. Screw the kinect game though. Also Rock of Ages and Miss Splosion man are coming out really soon. The XBLA arcade is going to make me poor.
  • Baron164 - June 27, 2011 9:18 p.m.

I'm sadly not really interested in any of these games. Dust looks interesting but the trailer doesn't contain enough information, so far it just reminds me of Black and White without the Giant monsters. I still haven't played the old Toy Soldiers.
  • DirkSteele1 - June 27, 2011 9:17 p.m.

I am quite excited by at least three of these*. Roll on Summer of Arcade. *does not include a Kinect game.
  • Austin_SJ - June 27, 2011 9:13 p.m.

The only game that I am completley uninterested in is fruit ninja. ITSP is a day of release game for me.
