World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria sold 2.7 million copies in its first week after its September 25 launch and pushed subscriber numbers above 10 million once more, Activision Blizzard announced today. But even in seven days the newest expansion pack could not eclipse the day one sales of either of its predecessors, Cataclysm and Wrath of the Lich King, which respectively sold 3.3 million copies and 2.8 million copies in their first 24 hours.
The influential MMORPG will celebrate its eighth birthday in the U.S. next month. The game's subscriber base dipped to 9.1 million in the last round of figures released by the company in August, but Activision Blizzard said the game has enjoyed "major growth across all major regions" after Mists of Pandaria's launch. The pack launched in China on October 2 and that region's sales did not figure into the released numbers.
The expansion retails for $40 and adds a new continent, class, and race available for both the warring Horde and Alliance factions. GamesRadar's review for the new content is forthcoming, but until then our reviewer's initial thoughts are available in a review journal.
