Yeh the loyalty of Jacob and Yusuf - how both of them come through for you in their respective final missions - makes them awesome. I also really like Dwayne, and the way his friendship with Niko develops - the way he gets increasingly nihilistic and miserable until Niko just tells him to shut up and consider that he's not the only person with a shady past...

Big Smoke (GTA:SA). He may have stabbed you in the back but he was the life of the party. shame you have to kill him. :(

I couldn't possibly pick just one - perhaps just a top 5. In no particular order: - Lazlow (for the same reasons mentioned) - Eddie Low GTAIV (for an incidental character to have such a creepy, fleshed out story is brilliant) - Kent Paul GTA:VC/GTA:SA (wish he'd return) - Johnny Klebitz GTAIV (I preferred Lost & Damned DLC than the main story) - Officer Tenpenny GA:SA (one of the best gaming villains of all time) But I'd like to give a nod to Sasquatch from GTA:SA. I know it didn't exist, but before I knew that, I had many happy hours in the San Andreas countryside looking for him and discovering loads of other cool glitches in the meantime.

Great article! Hmm I'm torn between both Packie and Brucie, but Gay Tony also tugged at my attention too. Ah GTA IV era. :D

Kent Paul! C'mon an annoying little Cockney twat, played by annoying little Cockney twat, Danny Dyer. Hard to chose though, there have been so many brilliant characters over the course of the series.

Yusuf, for how utterly insane he is.
  • Slayer11496 - October 19, 2011 10:37 p.m.

John Marston from grand theft horsey :)

Tommy Vercetti was a good protagonist. I thought that he was just a straight-up badass who didn't give a crap. Ryder in San Andreas was also a good character. He's like that one dumbass friend who makes a bunch of poor choices that you still like because he has an awesome personality.

When Vice City was first announced and they said that the character you play will have a voice, I was against it, in fact, I hated the idea. I liked providing the voice for Claude in my head. Then it was announced Ray Liotta would be providing the voice for Tommy Vercetti. I warmed up a little, but still didn't like it. I didn't like it until I noticed after certain cutscenes with certain characters, my favorite being Avery Carrington, when Tommy, leaving Avery's limo, mutters to himself about how Avery made fun of his clothes. It was those little touches that I applied to Claude that Rockstar applied to a speaking character. I loved it. The psychopathic Tommy Vercetti is my favorite GTA character.

Patrick McReary. you can screw his sister, kill his brother, and order him to blow people up for you. Packie is one of the most believable characters in any of the gtas. he also offers one of the most tragic stories in gta IV which i shall not spoil even though the game is like a million years old. Lastly he offers the greatest most memorable and rewarding mission in the game, the bank robbery! practically rolling digital money after that heist.

Kate's actually the only "girlfriend" character you can never sleep with. Personally, for me it's a tie between Tony Prince and Little Jacob. Tony was just such a well developed character and by the end of the DLC, I really felt for him. ANd Little Jacob's just plain awesome, for precisely the reasons outlined in this article.

Woozie from San Andreas. Likable and very funny.
  • Jacko415 - October 19, 2011 9:11 p.m.

Katt Williams in the comedy club in GTA IV. Hell yes.
  • G0D - October 19, 2011 9:03 p.m.

i really dug all three of the GTA IV era protagonists, they were so well thought out and multilayered. Niko, Johnny, and Luis will always have a place in my heart; and they are the reasons why I go back and play their respective campaigns frequently.

Mike Toreno form San Andreas, my favorite charterer played by James Wood. Most charming government agent ever written for a video game.
  • NEPAL - October 19, 2011 9:06 p.m.

Sorry for the typo supposed to be "character" not charterer.
  • pkozyra64 - October 19, 2011 9:02 p.m.

I was surprised Lance Vance didn't make the list even though he's an ass for betraying Tommy. The best part of him was his White Infernus.

Great Piece! Personally for me its a tie between the band LoveFist and Tommy Vercetti, mostly for the missions involving the Scottish 80's hair metal band in Vice City (drunkenly trying to defuse a bomb in their car while you struggle to keep the gas running and not do to much damage to the car). I also generally have a soft spot for Vice City in general playing as a character with a personality that embodies 80's crime films.

You know which character I don't like? Roman... I like Little Jacob the best because I have no idea what he's saying. Even the subtitles don't help.
