Video games as pop art

Who cares if games themselves are art or not? They make damn fine subject material for proper art. Or, more precisely, Pop Art - the colourful, bold style popularised by Andy Warhol in the 1960s, which inspired artists like Roy Lichtenstein. I've applied Lichtenstein's beloved 'Ben-Day Dots' style to six modern video games for your eyes' enjoyment. So please, step into the gallery...

Burnout

Burnout's explosive subject material is perfect for Pop Art. Here's the original image, which looks surprisingly colourless in comparison:

Bayonetta is the best and I'm not even a fan of the game. And I agree that we need to see these for Dead Space, Bioshock, and Fallout 3. I also want to see one for Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game. I wanna see an Isaac, a Little Sister, and a Scott and Ramona right now! PS: No need to specify for Fallout 3 because anything from that game would look awesome in pop art....except maybe Megaton...

Wow, impressive work. That Ryu is truly bad-ass. It's my new phone wallpaper- I really wish you could put up high-res desktop wallpaper versions of some of these. Also, classic characters like Mario and Samus would look great as Pop Art.

Good article, but really, six pages? Really?

Oh I'd also like to see a bioshock one. By the way, these could make create t-shirts in your shop! :D *hinthint*

This is awesome! The companion cube, Marcus and Bayonetta are my favorites. I'd like to see anything from fallout, maybe a B.O.S. ><; And Gordon Freeman!

These were all great but the Portal, Uncharted and Bayonetta ones where my favorite. I was suprised to not see any MGS in this feature

Oh, and sorry for the double post, but I'd love to see you guys try a rendition of any Yoshitaka Amano (really early Final Fantasy) art in ben-day dot style.

The Street Fighter one was awesome. I woulda loved an Metal Gear one or maybe a Valkyria Chronicles. Surprised you guys didn't do a Halo one.

I learned about this guy a little while ago in art literacy. Gotta say, your guys' impressions were a helluva lot more interesting.

I, oddly enough, would like to see a pop-art image of a scene from Mortal Kombat. It could either be the pulled off head with spine, the Scorpion "Toasty!", or the heart pull out. I don't know, go nuts.

These are sweet. My only concern is that some of the characters are much more detailed than most Pop Art figures were.
  • BoondockSaint54 - August 16, 2010 11:07 p.m.

Cool art. I probably could have done without the dialog bubbles.

  • Onepersonwithnoopinion - August 16, 2010 9:15 p.m.

These actually look pretty awesome. Final Fantasy(pick one), Super Mario Galaxy, or Earthbound(use the clay figures or draw out a scene).
