Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 revealed, adds 12 new characters and other tweaks

Remember a little game called Marvel vs Capcom 3? We thought it was pretty badass, and we really looked forward to all the DLC possibilities for the title. Sadly, after one modest costume pack there was nothing, aside from rumors that Capcom would do something similar to what happened to Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV, and Dead Rising 2 before it: Iterate the shit out of it with an updated retail game. Just in time for Comic-Con, Capcom made it official: Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is coming with 12 new characters, and Hawkeye, Ghost Rider, Firebrand and Strider are confirmed for the new roster.

With a planned release for November of this year, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 boosts the total character roster to 50 (provided you downloaded Jill and Shuma-Gorath), and despite our massive amounts of journalistic integrity, we’re pretty god damn hyped based on the four we’ve seen today. Here’s the breakdown:

Firebrand

Pretty much a forgotten character, Firebrand was the star of forgotten Ghost ‘n’ Goblins spin-off Gargoyle, one of our favorite Game Boy games of all time. He made a cameo in MvC3, so it’s only fitting Arthur’s old enemy be fully playable in this update.

Strider

Another classic Capcom star that’s unfortunately shifted to the background lately, this fantastic, futuristic ninja was a favorite in MvC2, so it’s about time he appeared in this game.

Hawkeye

Love him or hate him, Hawkeye is one of the core members of the Avengers and integral to Marvel’s history. Sure, he’s a circus freak that shoots arrows in a world where people lift mountains, but he’s still a fun character that adds a lot to a team. And did you see his special attack where he shoots Ant-Man at you? SQUEEEEE!

Ghost Rider

Forget the horrible Nicolas Cage film, Ghost Rider is one of the most badass characters in Marvel’s pantheon, at least as far as looks go. He may not have been in any ground-breaking stories, but a biker with a flaming skull that whips people with chains and breathes hellfire will always be awesome.

So ultimately (HAHAHAHAH) beyond the new characters, some other updates are coming to the title, with promises of balance fixes (something MvC3 sorely needs) and a new spectator mode so you can see the masters at work. And just like Super Street Fighter IV, the publisher is charging $39.99 for it.

But what about the rest of the characters? By our count, both Capcom and Marvel have four more to add each, so who will they be? Daredevil? Mega Man? The Thing? Frank West? Doc Ock? Captain Commando? Black Widow? Blanka?

UPDATE: Our speculation was short lived, as the eight remaining characters leaked a matter of minutes after the reveal. See them here.

Interesting, I was going to buy MVC2 but now I don't have to. Weird seeing Hawkeye on the front cover of anything. Do they really think he's that much of a draw these today. I'll solve this problem WITH ARROWS!!!

FUCK THIS SHIT I HATE YOU CAPCOM!!!!!! I bought there stupid collectors edition, there costume pack and ten shity one dollar for more arcade mode dlc BULL-SHIT. Then what do they do? filp me the bird bird and scream "FUCK YOU!" and decide to release this as a full game update and reset the fucking trophies/ achivements. So what, now i have to re-do arcade mode with all characters and re-do the combo challenges for ALL characters to get another platinum trophy/S-Rank for what is effectively a FUCKING PATCH!?!?!?!?!?! But damn it all to hell i love me some Marvel and will buy this. But i will buy it used because FUCK YOU CAPCOM i already gave you a metric shit ton of money and i refuse to give you more for this. I never buy used games because i want to support the people making it but theres no way i can support them doing this. I have lost all hype for Street Fighter X Tekken and am not going to buy it at all. i'll wait for Tekken X Street Fighter. i'll bet dollars to dimes Capcom realeases 3 version of SF X Tekken before the namco version is even realesed. Its like going to a bakery. You go in and buy a plain small yellow sponge cake that was sitting in the bakery for quite some time, and before you walk out the door the baker offers a much bigger sponge cake with frosting and jam and a cherry on top for a much lower price then the one you bought. You go back to the baker and ask him if you can trade your cake for the newer one and he says "NO FUCK YOU!". Then you ask him if he could please add the frosting and jam and cherry on top to the cake you just bought and you will gladly pay him for the additional toppings but he says "No if you want it the better cake go back in line and buy it". Fuck that and Fuck the people at capcom who thought this was ok.

    Yeah, not getting it.

Capcom's really starting to get on my nerves. They are the double (and in SF4's case, triple) dip champions of the gaming world. The message they're sending to me is to ignore the initial release of their games and wait for the eventual, slightly cheaper "upgraded version" to come 6 months later. Nope. You can bite my hairy ass. Also, you shouldn't have cancelled MML3.

lmao @ everyone who bought MvC3 and is now mad. You all are familiar with Capcom, right?
  • Psylockerules - July 20, 2011 10:21 p.m.

megaman, gambit and Psylocke im hoping for. pretty sure they said they couldnt do phoenix wright or frank west before. hopefully there will be a bunch of secrect characters too. ghost rider and strider are very welcome that red dragon can suck my balls

this is fucking gay, what was the point me buying mvc then. Guess i was just beta testers so that they could come out with the real game later. And $40 dollars again? I bought SSF4 because i loved SF4, it was game that worked and was balanced to begin with for the most part. Mvc, on the other hand, not even close. I love capcom, and its a good cool game but fuck this honestly
  • NightCrawler_358 - July 20, 2011 9:53 p.m.

Are you kidding me? I like the new characters I guess, (which the other 8 have already been leaked) but thats just Classic Capcom aint it!? Seriously, this is what I get for buying MvC3 day one!? I mad bro. Now I have to trade in my old copy and get back about 3 dollars, then dish out 40 dollars for the same, updated game!? I'M ALREADY GONNA BE BROKE FOR NOVEMBER!! *sigh* i have to buy it...
  • Tranquilbez34 - July 20, 2011 9:49 p.m.

*groans* They better announce good characters otherwise I'm not paying for it again!
  • Enclave84 - July 20, 2011 8:22 p.m.

Ugh, was this really nescarry? I mean I gotta agree with ThatGuyFromTV, why didn't they just release this as a DLC? I mean you have to pay -another- $60 just so you can have the extra twelve characters....and if their gonna call it the utlimate edition, why not just include Jill and the other guy with it? But yeah, I have a feeling that if enough people buy this, 6 months from when it releases your gonna get "Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Ultimate MEGA Edition". Also pissed that I bought the first version of this game and then they want more of my money for basically the same game, just a patch and DLC as someone else said. Hopefully my blockbuster can get it so I can just rent the thing for like $5
  • Lemons - July 20, 2011 7:55 p.m.

While I am very happy to see these new characters in it (plus more!) and that they will add even more than the ones already announced in the future I hope that you could download them as DLC, because if not, that means that after buying the first game brand f-ing new and then being conned into buying this new game brand f-ing new if they come out with a third edition with more characters or hell even DLC for this ultimate edition's disc that would mean in total it would come out to around $100 if not more, which is pardon my mouth, bullshit.
  • Xifihas - July 20, 2011 7:36 p.m.

Agh! I paid full price for MvC3 and now they expect me to buy it again! FUCK THAT!
  • bball42242442 - July 20, 2011 7:28 p.m.

I despise Capcom but my Marvel fanboyism will probably convince me to purchase this.
  • Personamanxx - July 20, 2011 7:26 p.m.

I wish they'd make a 3DS version of the game though. SSFIV3DE was pretty cool. I think they could make a version of this.
  • FirLocke - July 20, 2011 7:22 p.m.

Looks like not buying MvC3 was a smart idea! Venom, Leon S. Kennedy and Mega Man, please.
  • espenrio - July 20, 2011 7:18 p.m.

No pc version? I'm a sad panda, Capcom was doing so well with SSFIVAE going to pc :(
  • statutoryreparez - July 20, 2011 7:06 p.m.

wasnt firebrand in the super nintendo game Demons Crest as well? i loved that game
  • paganpoet - July 20, 2011 7:06 p.m.

I am so glad I held off on buying MvC3 now. I know Capcom's farm ways, I knew this was coming.

Glad I held out for this. Looks to be a barrel of fun. Iron Fist should have been in the game from the beginning.
