Square Enix is going to great lengths to convince Final Fantasy fans that FFXIII-2 will be huge improvement upon the first, and in its latest video the studio shows off just some of the tweaks, additions, and improvements it's adding to the sequel's battle system.

The video demonstrates Noel, Serah, and Snow trying out their new instant paradigm shifts, as well as getting busy with the game's 'cinematic action' moments (aka quick time events). All in the all, the so-called 'enhanced battle system' appears to offer a faster, more action-oriented experience. And while the trailer isn't in English, is still does an admirable job of showing off the most significant upgrades:

Earlier this week it was revealed that Square Enix and Ubisoft would be partnering to offer players an optional Assassin's Creed costume for Noel. Not that it will make any difference on the battlefield, but at least you'll look cool while you're shooting giant meteors and taking down Hoplites.

You'll have a chance to try out FFXIII-2's gameplay enhancements yourself when it releases for PS3 and Xbox 360 on January 31 in North America, and February 3 in the UK. There's a gallery of screenshots below, too, in case your insatiable hunger for all things XIII-2 needs more sustenance.

I don't see much of a difference, but then I liked XIII so I guess that's not a massive problem. I hope Sazh has an important role in it, but I wouldn't wish it on him to be put through another situation like having his son turned into a stained glass window. And a shame that Fang and Vanille are too busy being crystal. Basically I'd like to see everyone's story continue. After 60 hours with them, they can't help but grow on you a little.

Wow.. Squeenix is really advertising this is the game that it should have been. I don't know weather I should be insulted or flattered they want to do it right..

WOW....This series is dead to me, they went off the deep end. I'll stick to the classics like FF6!

Eh, the story still looks like it'll be shite, so I'll pass. C'mon Square! where's Versus??? That's the one that looks promising!

I know it would be out of character for Serah, but I really wish the dialogue options included Fallout 3 style phychopath options. "The bloody mangled corpses of my enemies are my only family! Also, I eat them."

"The cat is my only family!" Even Square Enix is getting caught up in lulcats. Tsk.
