    To answer Tom's weirdly ignorant questions about weaponry: yes, polearms were used, quite extensively. Mainly as anti cavalry, as the others said. I think they were most famously used by the Swiss armies, who were the among the first standing (re: regular, paid soldiers) armies in Europe. And yes, the handheld scythe ( I don't know the actual name) that the Dothraki use were real too. I think mainly in ancient Egypt, but they are definitely real weapons.
