Psychonauts 2 on Tim Schafer's radar

Forget Call of Duty: Black Ops - this may be the greatest gaming news you hear all week. Double Fine front man Tim Schafer has said that he's finally in the mood to consider a sequel to the 2005 cult adventure game, Psychonauts.

Speaking words that many have longed to hear, Tim Schafer told PSM3 that the time is right to start pursuing a publisher for a Pyschonauts sequel, perhaps even as a downloadable title, saying: "I'm ready to do it. I'd love to do it. It's really a question of getting a publisher who's interested in doing it."

Back in September it was reported that Schafer's former Monkey Island partner Ron Gilbert had joined the Double Fine team, after which it was later revealed that both Schafer and Gilbert were fiddling with ideas for a handful of secret projects. Putting on our amateur detectives hats, it's safe to assume that the idea for a Psychonauts follow-up has been brewing for a while.

"Over the years it's gotten into the hands of a lot of people through being two dollars on Steam for a while, and being pirated," added Schafer. "So it's gotten out there. So if all these people were going to buy the sequel it would be a big hit.”

Psychonauts was a game loved by many and purchased by few. Can a second attempt survive on cult fandom alone?

Don't get me wrong, Psychonauts is among my top 5 favorite games (if my avatar wasn't enough to tell), but I don't sure the game's universe needs a revisit, or even whether it would benefit for one. As a game built around originality and mold-breaking, the last thing a "next Psychonauts" needs is to build upon an established game. All above said, I'd still preorder Psychonauts 2 they allow me to. the "every psyche materializes as a different universe" schtick does make innovation much easier than, say, returning to a dystopian underwater city. GOGGALOR!

This game NEEDS to be made. Seriously. F the current and next Call of Duty games. Hopefully a game that deserves a sequel will get one.

I don't think that it's possible for Tim Schafer to do anything I disapprove of. Good show.

Just HAD to add in that pirating comment, didn't he. Yes, that would be the reason your game failed. And speaking of games failing, wonder how it'll be to pitch the idea of a sequel to a game that flopped from a company whose games tend to flop to publishers.

Notice you mentioned Steam there Tim? As in PC, and that the only Double Fine game on PC was doing really well on it? Enough to make you justify a sequel? So how about releasing Brutal Legend or Costume Quest on PC too hmmmm?
