Pokemon Black and White Easter egg: Game Freak's office in Hiun City

Hiun City is easily the largest city in any Pokemon game to date, to the extent that it actually feels like a real city. We haven't even finished exploring it yet, but we just came across something we had to share. Amidst the impressive skyscrapers and hustle and bustle of pedestrians, Game Freak has an office tucked away down one of the side streets. Does this mean they've relocated from their previous office on the 3rd floor of Kanto's Celadon Condominiums/Mansion? This location is definitely much more impressive than the original (they have a whole building now!), so maybe this was the real HQ all along.

Let's go inside, into the developer's offices and make NPC small chat with some of the people who worked on the game.

Above: Outside the office

Above: The lobby. Where's the receptionist?

Above: The office is on the 22nd floor

Above: The sound designer. How many new sounds did you notice?

Above: The game director! We hope he has a cool diploma for us when we complete the National Pokedex

How big is Hiun city, as well as the GameFreak building?

@enlargedhousecats I suppose that's true. But would it sell well enough in a world where rather than play it you can live it, such that they could afford a 22 story building in Huin City? :P @ThatGuyFromTV I heard something interesting recently... I'm struggling to recall the source right now, I think it was in the comments of Pokemon Monday 18's post... about that. While I agree, localization can't take that long these days (and in fact, doesn't, since they usually have it done and the NA game released within 6 months; so if they started localization from the start, they COULD have a global release) there's an element of timing with game releases to maximize sales, and that's a different date for the Japanese and for North Americans. Someone, somewhere, in some marketing office at Nintendo or GameFreak determined that this is the way to make the most money... even if it means we'll be waiting until March to play it in English. @RonaldRayGun @510BrotherPanda Actually, the money isn't the issue, nor the technical playability; it's the enjoyment. The simple fact is that there is no way I will enjoy the game if I play it without understanding the text nearly as much as I would if it was in my primary language. And since it is coming out in my primary language, not that far off, why would I give myself, for my first Black & White play-through, the sub-par experience rather than the one that will give me shivers, make me laugh, and all in all give me the best experience Pokemon can give me? If you could take $5 now or $10 tomorrow, which do you take? I'll hold out for now so that when the time comes, I can get my pure bliss in words that I understand. :P Plus, I need to save up some vacation time so I can take a week off, barricade myself in my room, and bury myself in the slaughtering and capturing of every Pokemon in the game.

There's a Gamefreak office in every game... O_o Nothing special or different here.

Hey Ronald, not everyone has $100+ to get both an Import copy AND the NA release, or parents willing to fund it. There are some people out here with Poke-patience, you know. Myself, I will be hopefully playing Ghost of Sparta, Patapon 3, Okamiden, or Super Scribblenauts. I don't think I'd get Black or White unless I can breed a Lopunny harem. And don't hate on the old Celadon office, Carolyn. The old Pokemon games were doing what they could with the original Game Boy, which was 7-9 years old already. Frankly, I never bothered visiting it in either Gen 1 or 2 except for the Eevee at the top floor. I thought the "Item Block R&D Lab" in the Mario and Luigi series was more clever, personally. I'm not saying poking fun at your own creators isn't still enjoyable.

Guys who are holding out for the North American release, if you are really dead set on playing black and white now you can. If your worried about not knowing what to do since the game would be in Japanese you really need not trouble yourself. I don't speak a lick of Japanese and I just cleared the elite four. I just looked up what moves my guys get at what level on serebii, and used trail and error on the menus. And I really only got stuck twice. Sure I missed out on the story but I'll save that for the North American release. Just thought I'd let you know.

I think you can battle Morimoto in this building
  • ThatGuyFromTV - September 24, 2010 2:09 a.m.

@Kapuran I know what your mean, dude. Can't wait for the North American release. I can't read Japanese and using GR's import guide feels like cheating. Why couldn't they have added a switch language option? Does localization really take that long for a bunch of text? I mean, I know it's a lot of text, but still...
  • enlargedhousecats - September 24, 2010 12:54 a.m.

@kapuran for the same reason you have virtual pets, boxing games, racing games, football games, etc. not all people can live the dream in the real world but they all can in the game world.
  • BlueEevee - September 24, 2010 12:12 a.m.

I give it three days before GR gets a threatening letter from Game Freak/Nintendo, asking them to take down the pictures
  • Kapuran - September 24, 2010 12:10 a.m.

Why would anyone need to play the Pokemon games when they're already in the Pokemon world? They're already in utopia, they don't need make-believe. :P I would probably put myself in the game too, if I were a dev. But an entire building mi-i-ight be overkill. Huin really must be enormous to justify that. I can't wait for the NA release...
