PlayStation 3 update nixes Folding@home, adds Vita trophies

The latest PlayStation 3 system software update will shore up trophy support (again), but will also spell the end of Folding@home support on the system. The PlayStation Blog outlined the changes coming in version 4.30 on a new post today.

Folding@home will sunset along with the rest of the odd little Life with PlayStation suite, which offered news and weather updates across the globe much like the Wii's dedicated channels. The program accumulated more than 100 million hours of distributed computing research for Stanford University's studies into Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and various cancers since its launch in 2007. It will no longer be offered for download and its services will end by November.

(For reference, more than 200 million hours have been spent in online Halo matches since 2004, but let's not read too much into what that says about us as people.)

It's not all teary farewells to odd little apps we looked at every year or two: PlayStation 3 owners can now view trophies unlocked on PS Vita games on their PS3s, and trophy level progress is now automatically displayed when looking at the trophy list under the PlayStation Network heading.

The price of progress, we suppose.

I wish they would make an update so I can download system updates in the background.

I don't understand, what could they possibly gain by removing Folding@Home support? Was it really THAT much of a tax on them?

I used to use Folding a lot, but that was on my first PS3, that ended up yellow lighting on me. My current slim version is not entirely reliable, and I haven't been using it for Folding much. I wonder if Sony'll add anything, or if it's just like the removal of other OS? Maybe it'll help improve performance, or something. Seems like an odd thing to remove after so long, if it doesn't help the system somehow.

What's the reasoning behind removing folding? Great help for the scientific community. With trophy support though, will they ever make it so you can reset your trophies for a game instead of creating a new profile each time you want to revisit a game from scratch or if a friend/family plays a game on your profile and gets the trophies?

I loved using Folding@Home, especially because it was one of the first apps to support music playing while doing something else and I liked looking at all the little molecules with different filters. I hope they got all the use out of it that it needed. Sweet that Vita is being integrated, but its not like they had to trade one for the other.

Bummer that Folding@home is going. I hope it helped. Cool about Vita trophies.
