New Silent Hill: Downpour screens are high in gloom

Silent Hill: Downpour, which is due out on PS3 and 360 late this year, is being developed by Czech studio Vatra Games, and stars a prisoner, Murphy Pendleton, who has become stranded in Silent Hill. Konami has been relatively quiet about the game, but we do know two important things: if there's any place on Earth suited for the development of a Silent Hill game, it's the Czech Republic, and if there's any composer fit to provide the music, it's Daniel Licht, who scored Showtime's Dexter.

The latest batch of screenshots, however, doesn't tell us much. The shots are gloomy, though. And dark.

I'm looking at the first pic in the article and I can't see anything but the numbers "101" written on the guys' back. Weird.

Disagree about the composer though, it should be Akira Yamaoka :(

@oufour actually, Silent hill Origins had fog, and that came after 3
  • podsaurus - April 16, 2011 11:15 a.m.

Never played a Silent Hill but this is something I'm keeping my eye on.

  • ZenRobot - April 16, 2011 7:31 a.m.

    ok, i get it. we'll never get another silent hill game like they used to make. so, why does it still hurt to bad? ok, now they're rebooting the series on the wii....they're making un-numbered sequels on the hd consoles. no more yamaoka music. hyperventalating.kjsafdkjjadjl;

The series just hasn't been the same since Team Silent stopped making them...oh well, I guess I'll just have to settle for Amnesia until they can make something else that can steal my sleep from me.

@ quincytheodore Silent Hill 1 had fog in order to cover the short draw distance of the ps1. This allowed it to make a large play area without breaking the system. Silent Hill 2 had it for a similar reason, coming out early on in the ps2's lifespan. There has been no fog in ANY silent hill game since. 4 had some light fog for atmospheric effects but that's about it. I don't know why people are surprised by lack of fog in a Silent Hill game when there hasn't been any for 5 GAMES.

[RANT]If they name it "Alan Wake 2", people will believe it.. This doesn't look like Silent Hill. No mist, scenic sunset on a cliff, oh so scary.. And if they put "Downpour" in it, why is the scene sunny? I want some heavy rain here..[/RANT] That being said, it looks kinda good.. I'll give it a try

@Redeater - The collectables were totally 100% optional. I don't see why those got so much hate... Anyway, when I saw that tram, I thought of the platforms toward the end of RE4, right before the Regenerators. or were they trams? It's been a while since I played it. But this looks great. Hopefully the story and gameplay measure up the the looks

@drunkunicron Yeah except I'm really fucking hoping I don't have to see giant billboards advertising Verizon and collect Thermos brands thermoses......because nothing says tight suspenseful gameplay like searching every area for collectibles.
  • drunkunicron - April 15, 2011 11:57 p.m.

@fetalspray I agree this really dose look like Alan Wake only crisper.
  • Sy87 - April 15, 2011 10:56 p.m.

The areas are looking bigger which can be a good thing. Oh and how am I suppose to type a gamma symbol from recaptcha?
  • BertTheTurtle - April 15, 2011 10:55 p.m.

I love exploring these creepy, abandoned areas in horror games, and the scenery and lighting are amazing. Can't wait to play it!

RE4 sequel? man I hope it plays like that.
  • fetalspray - April 15, 2011 10:12 p.m.

Hmm, definitely dark. Looks nice though, if the lighting is up to that of Dead Space 2 then this could certainly be an interesting one. Certainly some nice lighting effects on these screens.
