Mortal Kombat breaks our brains by announcing Freddy Krueger as DLC fighter

The rumors swirling around were true: Freddy Krueger is joining the cast of Mortal Kombat as a downloadable character. The dreamy killer is heading to 360 and PS3 August 9 and you can get the star of Nightmare on Elm Street for 400 points/$4.99. As a fighter, the scarred one will have two unique fatalities and an arcade ladder story ending. Watch the guy in action in the video below:

The inclusion of Freddy sets an insane precedent for who can be added to the game. Does this mean Jason Voorhees is coming soon? The Friday the 13th killer seems like a no brainer, but why stop there? Why not Michael Myers from Halloween, or Ash from Evil Dead, or even Neo from the Matrix? On a day as crazy as this, the possibilities seem endless.

This is excellent, indeed. As a horror movie fan, I hope WB and Netherealm keep up this crazy precedent and include Mr. Voorhees, although I do tend to agree with some other comments that he wouldn't fit as well as Krueger does.

meh, this doesn't really do anything for me, I prefer the originalo characcters, but still, it's a good idea for those wo enjoy freddy

The beauty of it is how it fits Freddy in so many ways.. From his teleporting, to his glove projectile, the claws extending from the ground. Fatality One references Johnny's death in the first Nightmare, and his second Fatality.. Hell, the boiler room has always been connected to Freddy. hell even the 2 gloves thing appeared (If I recall the first Nightmare, though it ws just to terrorize and he went back to one glove for the kill)

OMG. STOP with the damn Dead Island Crap! I dont want to play it anymore now that Ive seen it 4000 times!!! He looks like he plays a little funny, but its a cool addition.

I'm really hoping this is hinting towards other movie characters in Mortal Kombat. I would choke a man to play as Wilson from Castaway.

Oh and to the King of Fighters series: eat your heart out! :P
  • robertpopovic - July 22, 2011 4:19 p.m.

It's a bit odd that he's got 2 claw gloves now, but sod it... It's Freddy Krueger!!!!!
  • Boonehams - July 22, 2011 3:59 p.m.

Er, I mean, break. Damn homophones. Also, I can't wait to see his Babality.
  • Boonehams - July 22, 2011 3:34 p.m.

My brain never recovered from seeing Spawn, Darth Vader and Yoda in Soul Calibur games, so there's no brain left to brake over here.

Remake Freddy. Not Robert Englund. Ripoff. Still gonna buy.
  • CitizenWolfie - July 22, 2011 1:53 p.m.

Wait, has NOBODY else spotted that Freddy has 2 knife gloves? That just looks weird. The face looks iffy as well. But still, what a randomly welcome bit of DLC for a change.

Neo from the Matrix? Get it done! But Freddy was way out of left field, but still works out.

I bet the TDar guys lost their minds when this happened. It's kind of scary how well Freddy fits into that universe. I bet Jason will be coming closer to Halloween.

Well, that's awesome. Oh, and I'd TOTALLY buy the game if I could play as BRUCE frickin' CAMPBELL in it.
  • reuben0110 - July 22, 2011 10:51 a.m.

That's it, i'm definitely going to buy Mortal Kombat now.

Pennywise the Klown. Kreepy. (See what I did there;-)

I feel like if they used the new jason it could work, obviously he's not as agile as freddy, but the reboot actually had him doing more than a slow crawl. Somebody like blade would fit in perfectly tho, the character is a extremely skilled in hand to hand and has plenty of weapons for special attacks.

The Tall Man from Phantasm. He could use the little balls as a projectile attack.
