Microsoft countdown raises expectations for new Xbox at E3

Microsoft’s director of programming for Xbox Live, Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb, has posted an E3 2013 countdown clock on his blog, fuelling rumours that a successor to the Xbox 360 will be revealed by Microsoft at this year’s gaming convention.

In the post, titled ‘Countdown to E3 2013’ and accompanied with the words 'And it’s on...’, Hyrb offers no hints as to an ulterior motive behind posting the countdown clock, so it could feasibly be just that – a countdown clock to E3 2013.

But to be actively generating excitement about E3 2013 so early (still 158 days to go at time of writing) suggests Hyrb knows this year’s show is going to be a big one for Microsoft. And now he’s started the hype, anything less than a new console is surely going to be a disappointment.

Are you hoping this means a next-gen Xbox will be unveiled at E3 2013? Or perhaps you’d like some other megaton Microsoft announcement? Exciting new media partners for Xbox Live? Nike+ Kinect Training 2? More SmartGlass integration? A dedicated controller designed for asynchronous gameplay? Got ideas of your own – tell us in the comments...

Lets all just play NES for the rest of our lives and forget about actually living in the present day. Agreed, Kinect sucks for hardcore gamers and I doubt it will every be too useful but to say that a new xbox is a bad thing is just plain wrong. Even if you play on PC exclusively you will still benefit.

Even if they announce their next console, there's no possible way it's coming out this year. The earliest it could come out if there's an announcement for it at E3 2013 is Fall of 2014... a full 2 years after the U has already hit the market. I'm not interested such a console as the PC gaming space is only getting better and better and more appealing, and the U is just so fun. Those next consoles from Sony and MS are probably going to be way overpriced as well, and there isn't much they can do to add to graphical prowess to get on anywhere near as impressive a level as PCs today for a reasonable price tag. I just don't think there's much need for new consoles, and devs will probably agree as the cost of development of them will be astronomical in comparison to the U and the current crop.

In addendum, I think the only way the new MS and Sony consoles could justify their price is if they choose to do something really innovative and cool... something nobody's seen before except in mere concept. Like those VR headset things that people have been talking about, or those mind-control peripherals that I remember GR wrote about on here once awhile ago...

One can only hope that it'll be almost as legendary and epic and awesomely fun to play and watch as the newest, hyper-successful, Steel Battalion game that swept the world recently!

Personally, I'm more looking forward more to seeing a 343 Industries representative scribe the words "IT'S NOT ON RAILS, IT'S NOT ON RAILS" Repeatedly. And then, find out that the game was on rails all along! :D

Ya a Halo racing game lol

Shame on the n00b who clearly never exposed himself to the incredible wonders of Rocket Race in Halo 3. Shame. Man, they need to bring that back in Halo 4 matchmaking. Thousands of people were still logging on each day to play it even as it lost popularity...
