Everyone in the world shares a love of Mario’s raccoon-based power-up from Super Mario Bros 3, but it seems like Nintendo just forgot about the Tanooki Suit until this year. Not only is Super Mario 3D Land being hyped big time on the return of striped tails, now Nintendo’s other tent pole release for 3DS this holiday, Mario Kart 7, has a new special attack based on the adorable appendage. See it in action in these new screens…

Unlike 3D Land, getting this ability just bestows the tail, not the full body suit. Additionally, it looks like it’s attached to your car, not your racer’s behind. Though we haven’t seen what the item that bestows the power looks like, we feel safe in assuming it’s a leaf. We do wonder what effect it will have on the racing as it seems to only work as a close-up attack, though it appears that the tail increases in size and reach when you take a swing. And just how many attacks can you pull off with the tail before it vanishes? Surely Nintendo will share more with us before Mario Kart 7’s launch on December 4.

...Why would you want to be solid metal if you're racing? I guess that's not the topic at hand, but that's the only thing I could think of after seeing the screens. Sure, the tail is neat, but it doesn't seem like it could be very useful since you apparently have to be right next to someone to hit them. It's pretty much the same effect as having 3 shells circling your kart before firing them off and instead using them to ram someone, except you have to activate this and people can't just drive into you and end up wrecking.

As for the metal comment, tt depends on if you're going downhill :P.

I guess it's the racoon/tanooki era. Nintendo is throwing this into everything, and by everything I mean their two games. I guess they think we will forgive them by giving us "fan" service

I agree with you man, I've gotten really cynical about Nintendo ever since being really disappointed with Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Zelda Spirit Tracks, and ever since the E3 showing of the WiiU it's going to take waaaaaaaaaaaaay more than a raccoon tail to get me back on Nintendo's side
  • shawksta - October 6, 2011 3:08 p.m.

They got allot of games coming, but i guess its all your opinion on the matter, How is the WiiU showing a bad thing? I thought Mario Kart Wii was great, especially its Wifi and the time trials being handled by experts, I dont get why people dont like it, Same does with NSMBW, it was hard and seeing the koopalings back was awesome. Skyward Sword and Kirby's Return to Dreamland are look pretty good, for your sake it hope it will Please you.

I actually am looking forward to Kirby, it does look really good and I really liked Kirby's Epic Yarn My problem with MKWii was only that they took out the two player for Cup mode, which was what my friend and I would do too beat MK64 and MK:DD, we would tag team the computer and work together to be able to unlock new tracks and vehicles, finding out that they cut that out seriously left us heart broken I guess that's really not a fair judgement of the game, because otherwise I thought it was pretty good, and if it wasn't for that one (albeit very important to us) thing we probably would have listed it as our favorite As far as NSMBW I just couldn't get used to the controls, and I played it all the way to World 5 I think, I know I did give it a fair chance The WiiU just scares the hell out of me is all, I've been very disappointed with the Wii, but it isn't fair of me to judge something that hasn't come out yet

What are you talking about? Nintendo has BEEN reviving old things, the Leaf is just one of them. Forgive them for what? They've been making First Party games like crazy and they are appealing to the fans. Smash Bros. THAT is Fanservice

The times they are a-changing. Tanooki and Raccoon Mario have melded into one in Nintendo's eyes. I think it looks like you can spin your kart with the tail power and pop other drivers one. I'm thinking this is a limited time power. I would just love it if they would take a cue from Smash Bros and allow you to set which items shows up in multiplayer and which ones are never seen again (*cough* blue shell *cough*).

I think I'm more stoked for Metal Mario in this then the Raccoon Tail...
  • shawksta - October 6, 2011 3:05 p.m.

its possible its more of a metal power-up but the kart itself looks its own so it probably IS Metal Mario as his own character again! YAY!
  • Risonhighmer - October 6, 2011 1:39 p.m.

You guys mix this up way too often. The leaf is Raccoon Mario, the Tanooki suit is a different thing altogether. Tanooki Mario can fly AND turn into a statue, whereas Raccoon Mario can merely fly. From the looks of things this is a Raccoon Mario powerup, not a Tanooki mario powerup. It's like you guys never experienced the difference between the two and are only calling it by what you THINK it is. For a gaming news website you should be more spot on with your retro game facts.

Except in Super Mario 3D Land, the Leaf gives you the Tanooki suit.
