Gotham City Impostors revealed, is a Batman-themed FPS from the creators of FEAR

Rumored for a couple weeks, Warner Interactive today took the lid off Gotham City Impostors, a downloadable game for XBLA, PSN, and PC. It’s described as a first-person shooter taking place in the Dark Knight's home town and is developed by Monolith (FEAR, Aliens vs Predator 2, Condemned). However, the shooter doesn’t actually star Batman or his rogues. Instead you’ll be playing as a customizable squad of vigilantes that either fall into the camps of the Bats or the Jokerz (though the “z” on the end is regrettable).

Above: This is all you'll currently find on the official site

Currently the official site is detail-free, but some of the GR team were present for the reveal and sent us some early details. Impostors is styled like a grittier Team Fortress 2, with a look close to Arkham Asylum, though more colorful. You create a character starting with one of five body types which define your speed, strength, melee, damage, and durability stats, along with your weapon load out. You also have a set of gadgets to choose from that include skates, grapple guns, glider rigs, and smoke bombs. The first map our guys saw took place in an abandoned amusement park, a very fitting stage as roughly 45 percent of Batman comics take place in that setting (that's a fake number).

We’ll have a full preview soon enough, but this info is interesting, even if you’re initially letdown that you won’t be playing as the Dark Knight himself. And for comic nerds, there are several precedents for this situation in comic history. Who could forget the Sons of Batman, a team of street warriors from the seminal Dark Knight Returns? And in another alternate Bat-future, there's the gang of street punks known as the Jokerz in Batman Beyond, an animated series that was a million times better than it deserved to be. Will Gotham City Impostors follow any these examples or strike out on its own?

Fuck this. I want a sequel to No One Lives Forever or a spiritual successor or whatever.
  • crumbdunky - May 17, 2011 9:33 p.m.

Wouldn't a bazillion comic book Batfans be worried that he's(Batman) be against the use of firearms even by those supposedly being on his side? I see a lot of angry emails coming someone's way.
  • inkyspot - May 17, 2011 4:25 p.m.

Sounds Brinkish and that game scarred me. I'll pass.
  • Cruddi - May 17, 2011 11:31 a.m.

"I want a song, a dance... Batman's head on a lance" I hope you have to "kill" the other teams captain
  • Lando81 - May 17, 2011 6:51 a.m.

@Agentjorrrg Fear is a fantastic game. So is fear 2.
  • Alroos13 - May 17, 2011 4:44 a.m.

Batman is the perfect superhero theme to center this around. No other superhero character has as broad a range of comic story styles. Currently the Batman Inc. series cover "Super Hero" Batman, "Detective" Batman, "Hero with a Sidekick" Batman and "Dude with a million colorful, flamboyant archvillians" Batman. So why can't the Bat-verse give us an FPS in addition to one of the best third person action-adventure series going?
  • RebornKusabi - May 17, 2011 12:03 a.m.

Um... the last ****ing thing I wanted out of a Batman game was an FPS structure...
  • NightCrawler_358 - May 16, 2011 11:14 p.m.

This is a weird idea, but pretty interesting. and speaking of Batman Beyond, I'd love for the game to take place in the universe.
  • AGENTJORRRG - May 16, 2011 10:39 p.m.

Umm...why would you put "from the makers of F.E.A.R.?" That's not exactly a positive advert for the game...
  • Omrikon - May 16, 2011 10:36 p.m.

@jackthemenace: This doesn't sound so much like Team Fortress 2 as it does All Points Bulletin. I can only hope that it ends up getting right everything that APB did wrong originally, considering how miserably it failed.

Good to hear. First thing I thought when I saw the info about being on Batmans side or Jokers side was "Son's of Batman". To be honest, I thought the same thing with the fake batmen in The Dark Knight.
  • TheElephantManchurianCandidate - May 16, 2011 9:14 p.m.

Wow this sounds pretty cool, I'm pretty sick of the FPS genre but perhaps the batman universe can make me care again.
  • jackthemenace - May 16, 2011 8:23 p.m.

A grittier TF2? Sign me up. And now PSN's finally up, I'll be able to actually play Brink's online, come to think of it.
  • Sandman89 - May 16, 2011 8:13 p.m.

    Batman Beyond was so awesome
  • EnragedTortoise1 - May 16, 2011 8:05 p.m.

    Downloadable? Yes plox.
  • DarkSynopsis - May 16, 2011 7:38 p.m.

I don't know how I feel about this seems like the Batman franchise is just being tagged onto this title to help it sell and it being a Multiplayer game with no bot support from what I've read really does not help its chances of lasting. I will keep an eye on this and check out videos when they appear but right now just give me Arkham City! :P
  • GR_HenryGilbert - May 16, 2011 7:37 p.m.

@PhantomOfKrankor I just mean the concept of "teen Batman in the future" sounds so incredibly lame that it's amazing the show turned out really good
  • PhantomOfKrankor - May 16, 2011 7:33 p.m.

What do you mean by "a million times better than it deserved to be"?
  • TDUBBS - May 16, 2011 7:22 p.m.

I'm geussing this will be replacing Arkham City's lack of multiplayer
  • shadowreaper72 - May 16, 2011 7:12 p.m.

    Hmmm sounds sexy.
