The five best classic shooters (according to PC Gamer)

Opinions! We have a lot of 'em, but in this edition of PC Gamer's Playlist, we've somehow managed to distill our complex views on the big subject of classic shooters into a list of just five of our favorites. Note that our choices aren't based on some all-encompassing algorithm which weighs historical context, impact on the industry, and public consensus—these are the much-debated personal opinions of each editor, and we've focused on choosing titles which we still want to (and do) play today.

How do they define "classic"? 2004 is classic?

By the way, nice job starting off the article with 'Opinions!"

When I think '5 best classic shooters,' I think: Doom, Wolfenstein, Counter-Strike, Star Wars: Dark Forces, and of course Half-Life. I've played most of these, they're fun, but still, none of these go in PCG's top 5? Really? And I don't know if 2004 counts as classic, but to each their own.

Lol @ nobody picking Quake 3. I'd say: For STF, tribes, For deathmatch, UT 2004 or one of the first two quakes; But for a one on one duel experience that will never be matched, quake 3 (or more specifically, quake live, which is the same thing but honed and balanced to absolute perfection). BUT HEY, whats best isn't important. Variety is the spice of life and if I was lucky enough to have a large LAN group I would defs have all these games in rotation.

The original Soldier of Fortune... honestly, that game was the tits.
  • Redeater - January 13, 2012 7:33 p.m.

Holy Christ I forgot about that game after its terrible sequels! I spent an entire year in my twenties throwing knives into the legs of downed baddies!
  • Redeater - January 13, 2012 5:27 p.m.

I loved Unreal, Painkiller and Quake 1. I still wish they had gone this route instead of Romaro's SciFi path.
  • Eliath - January 13, 2012 4:54 p.m.

Since Tribes made it to the list, this list is valid.
  • Fhiend - January 13, 2012 4:49 p.m.

Love Quake 2. That should get an HD remake.
