EA Sports reveals Madden 12 cover finalists, controversy begins in 3... 2...

EA Sports may soon regret its decision to leave the image of its Madden franchise in the hands of online voters. Yesterday, the publisher announced the two football star finalists vying for a coveted spot on Madden 12's cover; one of which could put EA in an awkward position.

The tournament style promotion, which began with a representative from all 32 NFL teams on March 21st, has resulted in a final face-off between the Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis, and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. And while the argument can be made that Hillis is a few accomplishments shy of deserving a Madden cover, the real controversy in EA's online tourney is the inclusion of Michael Vick, who was convicted of running a dog fighting ring back in 2007, and has yet to shake off the stink that's followed him since.

Yeah, yeah, he paid for his crimes, stop being such a whiny pansy and all that. Fair enough. The man paid his dues as deemed by society. But even putting the horrific animal abuse aside (not something I ever thought I'd write), there's also the small fact Michael Vick already graced the cover of EA's football series for Madden 2004. If he wins, it will be the first time a player has made a repeat appearance. Surely there are other more deserving players who deserve the honor, no?

The online voting is open until April 25th, after which the winner will be revealed on ESPN's SportsNation on April 27th.

Well, as much as I love Michael Vick (as a football player), I'd say Hillis (or any other player, for that matter) would be a better idea. For obvious reasons, EA shouldn't risk putting Vick on its cover.
  • AGENTJORRRG - April 19, 2011 7:38 p.m.

He's a criminal. he shouldn't have been allowed in the voting in the first place.
  • Transmatrix - April 19, 2011 7:51 p.m.

I don't play Madden, but I'd be even less likely to buy the game if Vick was on the cover...
  • SteampunkJim - April 19, 2011 7:55 p.m.

I, for one, find this freaking hilarious.
  • db1331 - April 19, 2011 8:02 p.m.

Tom Brady had a much better season than Vick. He turned nobodies like Danny Woodhead into household names. He's also never done time in a federal prison. Aaron Rodgers would also be a better pick, being the Super Bowl MVP and all. Vick just got so far in the voting because he is popular with the idiots that are lame enough to actually vote for something like this. It's just like how he still made the pro bowl the year he had the most interceptions and worst passer rating of any QB in the league. I'm not afraid to say I don't like Vick. He's from my home town and represents exactly why I chose to move away. Dumbass thug criminals are a dime a dozen there now.

Let Vick get on the cover....or am I the only one who wants the dreaded madden curse to fall on him? he was on the cover in 2004 and threw 14td to 12int also lost 7 fumbles...would love to see him and the eagles have those stats again...I hate the eagles.
  • Myko - April 19, 2011 8:13 p.m.

fuck EA, they ruined command and conquer, ruined bioware, go ahead and get rich off your stupid madden games that come out every year with the same bullshit
  • soratos23 - April 19, 2011 8:23 p.m.

@erbclub, If I remember correctly he also broke his leg that year.
  • Ultimadrago - April 19, 2011 8:23 p.m.

EA, put Vick on the cover.

WTH? No Aaron Rodgers? That alone is what'r really wrong. The man finally steps out of Favre's shadow and wins a Super Bowl (over my favorite team too!), yet still no cover? As for who it comes down to apparently, Vick should get it. You don't have to like the guy to know he's an amazing athlete and a much better person than he was when he was on the Falcons.
  • Fady2Hotty - April 19, 2011 8:45 p.m.

Who buys this game for the lone reason of the player on the cover?
  • One-FISH- - April 19, 2011 8:56 p.m.

Wow, wonder if dog killing gets to be part of training camp.
  • Queefitswhatsfordinner - April 19, 2011 8:56 p.m.

If Vick being on the cover is such a problem (which I don't think it should be), then people should just vote for Hillis. It's an online poll for gods sake.
  • RicePuddingUK - April 19, 2011 9:13 p.m.

    Who actually buys these games?
  • TrojanGold - April 19, 2011 9:20 p.m.

@AGENTJORRG, yeah no he isn't, not anymore, he did what was sentenced to him and it's over, forgive and forget, MOVE THE FUCKING FUCK ON if everyone kept grudges their entire life over stuff there would be zero progress in anything @one-fish- oh man, soo witty and clever of you, you deserve a job as a regular writer, you're too funny remove head from ass before commenting people, this is why gamers are still considered retarded children
  • Abe504 - April 19, 2011 9:28 p.m.

Man America is the only country on earth that values a damn dogs life over a human, get over it, im not vouching for the guy but he did his time, its a dog, u know how many dogs we put down just for being alive everyday. And this is even beside the fact, who cares who is on the cover of Madden, u should be buying the game if a. you like football b. you live football video games
  • WillisTron - April 19, 2011 10:24 p.m.

@Abe504 This. I'm sorry, I love animals, like i really do - have my two dogs that I love to death. If I saw an injured dog I would probably scoop it up and bring it to a vet. BUT they are animals, not people - yes he killed a few dogs - I would never do it, but jesus, can we not view him as a murderer, or say who should be killed? So I would have to presume EVERYONE that lashes out on Vick has NEVER stepped on an ant or killed a fly right? They're living things too, why should a dog be more important? P.S. I'm not at all condoning animal cruelty, I think it's horrible. But to say someone should die because he killed a dog? That's pushing it way too far. I think the fact that he went to jail for it is more than enough.
  • Stabby_Joe - April 19, 2011 10:54 p.m.

@WillisTron "But to say someone should die because he killed a dog?" I thought it was a racket that ended up killing more than one?
  • EwoksTasteLikeChicken - April 19, 2011 11:36 p.m.

I hate this guy for being a dog fighter, but even if I put that aside, I really don't see what's so great about Vick. Lots of my friends like him, and I honestly have no idea why. Besides, it's not even fair to be on the cover twice, when there are better players that haven't been on there yet.
