Dragon Age 2 announced, new main character revealed

BioWare and Electronic Arts have announced that Dragon Age 2 is in development and scheduled to release in March of 2011 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The new main character is Hawke, a refugee and survivor of the Blight who mysteriously rose to power. In a recent press release from EA, Hawke was identified as “the single most important character in the world of Dragon Age.”

"With Dragon Age 2 we are creating an exciting new entry point into the Dragon Age universe while ensuring that fans of the original game retain a sense of satisfaction and familiarity in the world. We are amplifying the things that made Dragon Age: Origins such a huge success while introducing a more dynamic combat system, improving the graphics, and telling the most important story in our world," says Mark Darrah, the executive producer for Dragon Age 2.

Who wants to bet me that Hawke will be Morrigan's child from DAO?

Damn.....and I was just mulling over completing my second playthru for DA:O the other day. I need my epic fantasy adventure fix! I'm mixed on having a set main character, but I like the name and the concept story behind so I don't mind if my old character doesnt transfer over. Hmmm it makes me wonder now if the story in Origins was relatively minor in the grander scale of things and this story will be more central in the dragon age world

The vibe I'm getting from all this is that the RPG and strategic elements are going to be scaled waaay back and simplified in favor of better graphics and more actiony gameplay, just like ME2. Really hope I'm wrong, but that's sort of what it sounds like...

Yayayayayayay, too many good games. Hopefully this will be awesome.

Oh crap, I just read the full announcement. He or she can only be human. That sucks imho. Oh well, still very excited. Just less so.

Awesome. I shall begin counting down the days. I'm quite happy they're going with a different protagonist. Continuing Mass Effect 2 syle with "The Warden" would be too weird, especially if you haven't purchased/played through Awakening (I haven't and never will). However I'm also hoping that "Hawke" can be male or female (99% sure of that) and either a Human, Elf or Dwarf again.

@db1331 I'm aware. However, the first Dragon Age had many similar traits to KoTOR 2.

I can't even explain how stoked I am. I have been waiting for this announcement for awhile now. I'm glad to see they are taking somewhat of a new direction because with all the DLC released for the first one I was starting to get bored. Im also happy to hear they are putting an emphasis on improved graphics cause the first was a bit muddy. I can't say enough about BioWare and the work they do... they continue to make top quality games EVERY TIME, and in my opinion are the BEST developer out there bar none.

YEEESSS! Cannot wait. I am super excite! @nighthawk205 It's definitely not during.
  • PanzerDSS - July 8, 2010 6:15 p.m.

I assume nothing carries over from DA:O or DA:O:A?
  • db1331 - July 8, 2010 6:14 p.m.

Tygerclaws- BioWare wasn't responsible for KoTOR 2.
  • nighthawk205 - July 8, 2010 6:13 p.m.

Is this a sequel to Origins or the story told from a different perspective as well as over a longer period of time?
  • Mexicutioner - July 8, 2010 6:12 p.m.

DA2 already? It feels as Dragon Age: Origins "barely" came out. I'll still get it though. lol
  • db1331 - July 8, 2010 6:12 p.m.

If this were any other company I would be calling this a rushed cash grab. But it's BioWare. They wake up in the morning and piss great games. I still haven't played Dragon Age. I imagine I will pick it up for $10 during the Steam holiday sale.
  • Fata1Stryke - July 8, 2010 6:12 p.m.

I really should play the first Dragon Age, but I'm glad I can jump in on this one without the prior experience if I want. As if early 2011 doesn't have enough good games coming already...
