DmC: Devil May Cry - Four extreme difficulty settings confirmed as unlockable

Don't go worrying that DmC: Devil May Cry is going to be too easy following the series' move to a western developer. At a recent preview event we spotted evidence of the return of four of the series' traditional unlockable difficulty settings, a couple of which should be as far from a push-over as it gets.

As is to be expected, the first becomes accessible after one complete playthrough on any of the default difficulties, with each sucessive special setting becoming available following the completion of the previous. With Human, Devil Hunter and Nephilim standing in for the standard Easy, Medium and Hard settings, DmC's extreme selection comprises the following:

Son of Sparda - Enemies get tougher, attack waves are remixed.

Dante Must Die - Contains the strongest enemies and insane attack waves

Heaven or Hell - The remixed mode, but everyone and everything, including Dante, dies after one hit.

Hell and Hell - The same as above, but only Dante dies after one hit.

Feeling reassured about the level of challenge Ninja Theory's DmC is going to bring? Let us know. Don't forget to check out our latest hands-on too, freshly posted to that there internet just this very day.

Hell or Hell is going to be intense, but I will do it. Oh yes...I will do it.

What is up with the use of the word Nephilim/Nephalem in games today like it's a brand new concept? It was a main story arc in Darksiders 2, Diablo 3, and now this?

Was Heaven or Hell always like that? Admittedly, I think I only ever tried it ONCE in DMC3, but I swear it was more akin to the Hell or Hell mode listed here, where only Dante died in one shot? I'll have to try giving it a go on DMC4 if I ever get past Dante Must Die mode. Still, after beating Bayonetta on Legendary Dark Witch, I quite fancy my chances with that one...
