Dishonored sells well, franchise confirmed

Expect more steampunky plague-ridden open-level stealth in the future: Dishonored has outsold Bethesda's expectations, solidifying the project as a franchise for the publisher. Looks like new IP can succeed, even in a season filled with titles from triple-A heavy hitters like Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed.

"I can tell you that Dishonored is far exceeding our sales expectations, which is especially cool considering it’s new IP facing a host of well-established franchises this quarter," Bethesda VP of marketing Pete Hines told Destructoid. "We did terrific numbers again this past weekend, both in stores and on Steam, where Dishonored was listed as the No. 1 selling title over the holiday weekend. And Dishonored has really sold well overseas."

Bethesda didn't reveal specific sales numbers, but whatever they were, they were good enough to more or less guarantee a trip back to Dunwall--speaking of which, check out what we'd like to see in a theoretical Dishonored 2: Dishonored Harder.

"So, we’re very pleased and appreciate all the fans that have supported Dishonored and Arkane," Hines said. "We clearly have a new franchise."

Well done everyone who bought this awesome game, maybe now big publishers will start taking risks and we shall get some new story driven adventures

Oh, yeah. Sure. That's what Gearbox said when Borderlands sold well. Look where it got them :p
  • shawksta - November 28, 2012 10:45 a.m.

Look where it got them what? Frankly Borderlands 2 was bigger and better in everyway to the original unless your implying something else

You mean one of the best selling and best reviewed games of the year?
  • shawksta - November 28, 2012 10:47 a.m.

Nice to hear, just don't over do it

I'll be buying this game again on Steam when it is reasonably cheaper. I would also buy this in a second for the wii U if they integrated some sort of ZombiU map/radar so I wouldn't have to have my "detective vision" on the whole game.

A franchise of what? Did they see their own ending? I guess we'll just get to see more outsider. Oh boy.
  • Cosmis - November 28, 2012 7:43 p.m.

If only there were three other islands we didn't get a single glimpse of in the universe. Oh well.
  • Fraught - November 29, 2012 2:23 a.m.

Haha. Yeah, we can still dream, can't we?
  • Viron - November 30, 2012 4:31 p.m.

Usually a franchise has reoccurring characters that might be recognized from previous installments. But seeing as SPOILER ALERT (I guess) practically everyone dies the only person we're likely to see again is the Outsider. I guess the first one was just setting up the universe and the other ones won't kill off all but 4 main characters.

I started the game a few days ago and I'm really enjoying it. Interesting story, solid gameplay, superb visuals (from an artistic standpoint), great atmosphere. If you haven't tried it, you should.

Very happy to see this. I actually pre-ordered this game and really enjoyed it. The multitude of ways you were allowed to tackle a mission was refreshing. I also like the semi-open world approach to it wherein each mission had it's own sandbox of sorts. The story however was lacking, so let's hope the next one is less predictable and more cohesive.

Hey GR, why are these solicitors suddenly popping up like weeds? It wasn't like this just a few months ago if I'm correct. But good god, this one's got decent grammar. I almost called it a near illiterate by mistake.

Just don't mess it up, a lot of people now have high hopes including myself. Dishonored's got to be one of my favorite games in recent years.

Glad to see new IP's gaining some footing. Dishonored looks amazing, but I've sadly not played it. It's definitely one I plan on getting sooner or later, maybe get lucky and save some money during a Steam sale for it.

Finally finished the game last night and it's definitely worth a sequel, although I wonder where they will take it story wise. Nothing about the game's ending screamed for a need for one.
