Dead or Alive 5 gets new Photo Mode for even better 'photographing'. Also, first shots of new character, Rig

Dead or Alive 5 is going to feature marked improvements to its replays and photo modes, just so you can focus better than ever on the... action. But before we get onto those improvements, we probably should mention the news that's actually going to affect the gameplay: New character Rig has been shown off in Japanese gaming mag Famitsu and here he is:

Above: A Canadian wrestler specialising in Tae Kwon Do, and all-new to the series

He looks big and chunky. There's not much more to say, except that he's going to be voiced by Hiroki Touchi (who voiced Uncharted's Nathan Drake in the Japanese dub) and that his character was first discovered by hackers poking about in a demo version. He's not alone in the roster announcements, though - Bass Armstrong (Tina's dad) has also be confirmed as returning for the new game.

But if male characters are not what you buy DoA games for, there are some more additions to look forward to. Namely a replay mode that allows you to move the camera around during matches, even in CPU vs CPU encounters so you don't have to worry about actually playing the game.

There will also be a new and improved Photo Mode that will allow you to manually set the tilt and angle of the camera, presumably instead of taking shots in real-time like you do in DoA Paradise's Venus scenes.Judging by the gameplay we've seen so far, it should come pretty close to the press shots.

Above: Yes, Ayane! The camera loves you! Give me 'wild'. You're a tiger. Growl, baby (etc)

"Namely a replay mode that allows you to move the camera around during matches, even in CPU vs CPU encounters so you don't have to worry about actually playing the game." So, just like DoA 4 then? So what exactly is Hayashi doing to this game that is going to be different?

STAGES THAT DESTROY THEMSELVES AND WITH CRAZY STUFF GOING ON THAT DISTRACTS FROM THEE FIGHTING. Seriously, so far, that's about the one "new" thing they seem to be pushing for this game. But hey, considering how crappy Ninja Gaiden 3 turned out to be, I think it's best if they leave the fighting mechanics untouched instead of misguidedly trying to improve them, no?

Oh I'd definitely prefer it if they just left things from 4 and shipped it with two new characters and better stages, it's just everyone seems to treat the features in the game like they haven't been in previous installments or something. It feels a bit bothersome.

Um... That new guy looks pretty much like Tekken 4 Jin Kazama on Steroids. And no, that's not a compliment. I gotta say, ever since DoA 3, I've yet to see these guys make a worthwhile new character. All the new ones in DoA4 were boring, and this new guy frankly looks no better.

There have only been two new characters in Dead or Alive since Dead or Alive 3. And those are Eliot, who was a Gen Fu clone more or less since he was Gen Fu's apprentice and was obviously going to be made to replace him in later games since Gen Fu had no reason to participate in any more tournaments. He fought like a faster version Gen Fu and had some variations on his preexisting combos that kept him feeling new. Kokoro was a well balanced character who was supposed to be somewhere between her sister and Lei Feng in terms of fighting power/style. I think they captured this perfectly as doesn't really feel like anyone else in the game and is honestly one of the better characters for combos and reversals, at least for me. The spartan doesn't really count but, if you want to know the truth, she fights like an over powered Leon. I want to agree that Rig probably won't be anything special, but seeing as how this is a fighting game, I'm going to have to wait until I can actually play with him before I can pass final judgement. Though, first impressions aren't really working in his favor right now.

You forgot the masked wrestling black girl. Which goes to prove how forgettable she was. As for Kokoro and Elliot, i was referring mostly about their looks. Both frankly looked bland as hell if you ask me. And for their fighting styles, Elliot was alright, but kokoro just wasn't my thing. Though that's because I guess I just prefer the more aggressive, flashy characters like Jan lee or Hayabusa. And for this new guy. Yeah, I agree that I can't judge until I can finally play him. I'm just saying that I'm really not impressed by his looks. The hoodie just looks like a sorry attempt to make him look "edgy".

Actually, I thought Lisa was added in DoA 3 for a bit which is why I didn't include her. As for Lisa, I liked since she was the second grapple based female in the series. She isn't one of my mains, but she's fun for me at least, when I'm trying to mix things up a bit. She functions best as a complement to either Zack or Tina in tag matches. No, no. It's a sleeveless hoodie. This guy is the very definition of "edgey." *laughs*

Just caught a gameplay trailer of Rig on Youtube. He looks to fight like Zack with no real distinction. watch?v=2CyyCdFdlhk#ws

They just added the vid here on GR, and i commented there already XD Anyway, I disagree, I don't really think he fights like Zack, since this guy very obviously relies mainly on kicks with long range, and he's supposedly a tae kwan do fighter. If I remember correctly, Zack is Unorthodox enough that he doesn't really have a proper fighting school. Like i said in the other vid, so far, he reminds me of howarang, and I like howarang, so that's a good thing.

I have to admit, for a time waster, DOA is damn good. I know a lot of people dismiss it for being a masher... which it can be, but playing against someone who actually knows the reversals and tech hits, that sort of playing is shut down.

Sounds like the Photo mode in DoA Dimensions for 3ds
