About Soccer [ixxx] ***** Soccer (football) is regarded as the most popular sport in the world. It is known by such tags as "The World's Game" and "The Beautiful Game". Though there are many variations and rules, the game is typically played with eleven men on each side. The objective is simple. Put the ball in the back of the other team's net more times than they do so in yours. There are, of course, a few stipulations. I'll cover the most basic rules and terminology here. Handball - Simple enough. Don't use your hands or arms to direct the ball. Typically an official will not stop play if you break this rule accidentally. Offside - If you are receiving a pass, you must have at least two defenders in front of you when the ball is released from your teammate's foot. The goalkeeper can count as one of these defenders. Strikers will try to hang on the very edge of the defender's line in order to gain an advantage. Penalties - There is a box around each goal. It is known as the 18-yard box for obvious reasons. If a defender commits a foul inside of this box, the other team is awarded a penalty kick from a designated spot within the box. This doesn't happen so much because officials are very cautious about giving the game away on an iffy call. Yellow Card - A caution. You won't get a yellow card for being offside but you will receive one if you take out a player while trying to get to the ball. You can also receive one for intentional handballs. Red Card - Automatic disqualification. This is given out for violent tackles and unsportsmanlike conduct. You can also get a red card for having two yellows in the same match. Your team must play a man down for the rest of the match. Tackle - A tackle, or challenge, is the attempt to take the ball away from a player in possession. Injury/Stoppage Time - The clock does not stop during soccer matches. If an injury occurs and play must come to a halt, the official will add time on to the end of each half. This time almost never amounts to more than four minutes for each half. Substitutions - In most professional leagues, teams are allowed three substitutions per match. Free Kick - If a foul is committed during play, the official will stop play and award the victimized team a free kick from the spot where the foul occurred. Corner Kick - If the ball rolls out of play along the opposing team's goal line and was last touched by them, your team receives a free kick from the corner. Goal Kick - If the ball rolls out of play along the opposing team's goal line and you were the last to touch it, the opposing team receives a free kick from the six yard line. Marking - Defending a certain player. Volley - Making contact with the ball while it is still in the air. Advantage - An official may not call a foul if he sees that the victimized team has an advantage even though the foul occurred. This is to prevent cheap fouls that stop fast-breaks. ***** ii. Modes of Play [vxxx] ***** a. Kick-Off [kovo] This is just your typical exhibition mode. Pick two teams (from any and every league in the game). Establish a scenario if you wish. Choose from such options as time remaining, score, disqualification, etc. b. Manager Mode [mmty] This has been the bread and butter of the FIFA franchise. Start from the bottom with the 16th place team in a smaller league and work your way to international glory. You could also start at Chelsea FC, but where's the fun in that? =P -Picking a Sponsor- Manager mode comes with a couple options. First, you'll need to pick a sponsor. Each sponsor will offer a different amount of financial compensation on a per-game basis. They will also offer performance-based rewards. If you don't think you're going to be winning any tournaments in your first season, I'd choose the sponsor that offered the highest per-game salary. -Board Expectations- Throughout manager mode, you'll have to work to reach a series of board expectations. Some of these requirements may be very easy. Extend a certain player's contract. Upgrade your striker coach. Finish in the top half of the league. As you can see, some expectations require you to allocate your finances a certain way and others may make you work towards a higher spot in the league standings. The better your club, the harder the expectations get. If you're managing for a club like Real Madrid, you may be expected to win no less than 3 trophies in a given season. -Dealing with Players- In manager mode, you have to make sure that all your players are getting the playing time they desire. You control everything from pitch time to personal development. Your club will also have a fan favorite. You'll be alerted as to whom it is at the beginning of your campaign. Make it a priority to keep him on the field when you can. Don't sell him or bench him unless it is absolutely necessary. -Pre-Season Friendlies- Prepare your team for the upcoming season with a couple exhibitions. -Transfer Market- The transfer market is where you'll build and re-build your team. You'll find that every player has his price even if they are not listed as "for sale". You must pay a fee to that player's club and also negotiate a new salary for said player. He'll want much more money than he's making at his current club. There are a few things you can do as far as making players avaialable. Buy a Player - You pay to have exclusive ownership of a player's rights. Sell a Player - Get rid of that expensive reserve riding your bench to free up some cap room for your starters. Loan a Player - Borrow a player who may be sitting on the bench at a more prestigious club for one or more seasons. You still have to pay a fee to that club, but it's not as hefty as if you were buying him. You can change the availability status of any player on your team under the transfer market menu during the transfer season. By default, everyone is listed as "not for sale" unless they are retiring. So if you want to make changes to your club, this is the place to do it. -Scouting- Can't find the last piece of the puzzle for your perfect team? Send your scout to various parts of the globe to look for that position player you need. You can choose where your scout goes, what type of player he looks for and how extensive his search is. A deeper search is going to cost you more money. You can upgrade your scout in the Staff Upgrade section of the office menu. -Youth Academy- Pay close attention to your youth academy. These players start out with mediocre stats, but they'll grow into stars with the right amount of playing time and development. They are also a cheap way to fill out your roster. -Relegation/Promotion- Some leagues, including the Premiership and the Italian Serie A have a system that sends teams to different league based on performance. The bottom three teams in the Premier League will be relegated to the Football League Championship for one season. Meanwhile, those teams will be replaced by the three top teams in the Football League Championship. Relegation/Promotion occurs at the end of every season. Your board may require you to achieve a league promotion if they think it is possible. -Financial Prediction- This page is not that helpful because it doesn't know what transactions you have planned. If you have nothing planned, then you can see what your club's financial situation is going to be at the end of the season. -Player Contracts- Go here to see how long you have certain players signed for and how much you are paying them. -Job Security/Team Chemistry/Fan Support- Job security is increased by winning and accomplishing board expectations. Team chemistry is increased by keeping a starting XI together and having a lot of success with them. Fan support is helped out by playing the fan favorite, beating rivals, winning at home and various Q&A sessions. -Staff Upgrade- If you have some extra cash, invest in some staff upgrades. Adding on to your stadium will be a costly undertaking but will result in higher income garnered from ticket sales. A better medical staff will allow your players to recover from injuries more quickly. Positional coaches are pretty much self-explanatory. -Export Team- Built an amazing team? Export it to use in kick-off mode and impress your friends. c. Be a Pro Mode [bapm] This was an interesting idea that I came up with a few years ago. Unfortunately I do not own a video game developing company. Alas, I'll settle for EA's version of this ridiculously awesome concept. The camera focuses on you from an over-the-shoulder angle as opposed to following the ball around the pitch. Be-a-Pro mode allows you to control a single player on the pitch as opposed to entire teams. You'll have to play according to the player you choose. If you choose Fabio Cannavaro, you'll have to stay back and knock away any stray balls that enter your 18 yard box. If you're Torsten Frings, you'll have to hold down the midfield, making tackles as necessary and doing whatever it takes to maintain possession. My point is that sometimes you'll have to avoid the nagging temptation to charge up the field and score. All you can do is trust in your teammates and play your part. You'll earn points for making good tackles, distributing the ball and playing in position. You may not see too much of the ball if you're John Terry of Chelsea FC and playing against, say, Wimbledon. >_> Just be patient. If you choose a player with great technical ability (C. Ronaldo, Kaka, etc), then you'll have Fifa 08's trick system at your disposal. This is utilized by holding down the left trigger and manuevering the analog sticks. See the controls section for more detail. Be warned that tricks are much harder to pull off with lesser players. The following is a section from the FAQ part of the guide. It's probably the most common question I receive. Q: Can I create a player to use in the Be-A-Pro mode? A: Unfortunatley this is not possible in Fifa 08. I am nearly 100% sure that EA is fixing this in the 2009 version. Sorry. =/ d. Tournaments [tidk] There are a variety of tournaments available in Fifa 08. There are 60 in all, 35 of which are licensed. Naturally, there is no World Cup tournament because EA is under the impression that they need an entirely separate game for that (and even a separate game for manager mode now...how depressing...). However, with the ability to customize tournaments, you'll have no problem setting up your own. You can choose from a variety of formats and even pick which clubs can participate in your tournament. I've received a few questions about formatting, so I'll answer it here and in the FAQ section: Q: Can you explain how group stages work? A: At the beginning of the tournament, teams are placed into groups. Typically there are four teams to a group. Each team plays the other teams in its group (whether it be once or twice). At the end of the round robin, the top two teams from each group advance to the knockout rounds. The first place team in each group will play a second place team from another group. Those matches will make up the first round of a single-elimination tournament to decide the champion. e. Online Play [opre] There are a variety of different things that you can do in the online lobby. You can participate in matches as they happen in real life. You can join leagues of up to 32 people and play an entire season in one of the following leagues: F.A. Premier League, Bundesliga, French League or Mexican 1st Division You can even create a group of friends for a less-competitive environment. I have not tried online play yet so more information will come when my Xbox 360 gets back from Texas...yeah, I red-ringed. As per usual, you'll also be able to choose from Quick Match or Ranked Match. Custom scenarios are also available. f. Challenge Mode [istn] Here's a complete list of challenges in FIFA 08. You need to accomplish some of these to have some points for the fan shop. Check out Tim Roast's Challenge Mode FAQ for tips and strategies! -First Region- 1. Gameplay [viio] ***** a. Positions [psts] -Forwards and Strikers- Abbreviations: ST, CF, LF, RF These players will play the farthest up the field. They will generate most of your team's goals. They are typically the best finishers. Taller strikers will have an easier time getting their heads to a long cross or corner kick. Smaller strikers must rely on their speed to get behind the last line of defense. Examples: Fernando Torres, ST Frank Lampard, CF -Midfielders- Abbreviations: CAM, LM, RM, CM, LWM, RWM, CDM There are many different types of midfielders. Some are at their best when they are in attack mode (hence the "A" in CAM). Some midfielders, called "holding mids", are tasked with cleaning up any loose balls in the midfield and keeping possession for their team (these are CDM players). Other midfielders are playmakers for their teams, generating offense by making runs or getting the strikers involved. Wingers (LWM, RWM) typically run down the side of the field in order to cross the ball into the box and open up the defense. Examples: Cristiano Ronaldo, RWM Torsten Frings, CDM Andrea Pirlo, CM -Defenders- Abbreviations: CB, RB, LB, LWB, RWB, SW Centerbacks hold down the middle of the defense, clearing out anything that enters the box. Right Backs and Left Backs patrol the sides in attempt to prevent the opposing team from generating crosses. Sweepers clean up anything and everything on your side of the pitch. Examples: John Terry, CB Philipp Lahm, LWB b. Formations [ftms] Formations are typically given in terms of how many players you have in each part of the field, starting with the defense and moving up the field. -Common Formations- Quick note about formations: Looking at the numbers, one formation is not necessarily more defensive than another. One team's 4-3-3 can be astoundingly different than another team's 4-3-3. It depends on the roles that you assign your players. If you have a wing-back who is excellent coming down the field, you will probably play a more offensive game than if you had a shutdown defender in that spot. Having said that, you have to choose a formation that suits the types of players you have. Finally finding the right strategy is an art form that only the best managers in football are capable of. 4-4-2 = Four on defense, four in mid and two up front. Pretty standard material here. This formation will balance your attacking and defensive perogatives. This is a good formation to use if you have capable midfielders. 4-3-3 = Sacrifice a little bit in the midfield to have another player come forward. This is great for teams with better forwards. Your goalkeeper is not included in the formation type for obvious reasons. I suppose you could play a 4-4-3, but you'll probably have a hard time keeping the ball out of the back of your net. ;) c. Strategies [stgs] -Tactics- You can use the D-Pad to change your tactics mid-game. If you have the ball, offensive options will appear. If you are on defense, defensive tactics will show up. Offense: WP = Wing Play = If you have wingers on the field (in midfield or in the back), they will make runs down the side of the pitch. Get the ball to them so that they can cross it into the box. Philipp Lahm is a master at this kind of thing. BO = Box Overload = If you're trailing and need to take some risks in order to get back into the game, select this tactic to make your players push forward. CA = Counter-Attack = If you disposess the other team on your end of the field, your players will charge forward in hopes of catching the other team on their heels. A good way to turn defense into offense. MR = Man Release = Will trigger a run by your striker or forwards. Defense: OT = Offside Trap = Your defenders will hold a straight line and move forward to try to catch the opposing strikers offside. Not a good tactic to use unless you've got some speedy defenders. FB = Flat Back = Your defenders will keep to their line. Doesn't make sense to use unless you're combining it with the offside trap tactic. PR = Pressure = Your players will play the ball very tightly. This typically works well against the computer because the AI usually doesn't make the right passes to counter this technique. However, a long cross into the box may catch your defenders ball-watching. ZD = Zone Defending = The defenders will keep to their zones, meaning that they won't leave their particular places on the pitch. Works very well unless the AI decides to overload one side. -Playing Against a Better Team- Weaker teams beat high-calibur teams by controlling possession. You may think that putting more players on defense is a good way to keep you in the game, but that typically won't work quite as well as you would hope. If you want to truly limit the other team's chances, keep the ball away from them. Pass the ball around and slowly work your way up the field. Otherwise you may find that your goalkeeper is little more than target practice. Play intelligently. Don't give the ball away easily. Remember that 90% of the time, you'll be able to pass the ball back to a holding mid or defender. Don't try to squeeze the ball into a tiny space. Be patient and your chances will come. Avoid the long ball. Liverpool FC are famous for defending with 9 men and just launching the ball downfield to the striker (Crouch) at every opportunity. This is no way to generate goals and is horribly painful to watch. Avoid harsh tackles. If you're not going to get the ball, don't go sliding in. You don't want to find yourself down a man in the late stages of a game because you got frustrated. Avoid giving up crucial free kicks and especially penalties. Don't commit silly fouls near or inside your 18 yard box. Penalties are almost garaunteed goals for the other team and a dangerous playmaker like Juninho can punish you on a free kick. If the opposing team has a 1 on 0 scenario, rush your keeper at whoever has the ball. This will close down any angles that your opponent has at the goal. They may still score, but you'll have a better chance than if your keeper just sat on his line the whole time. When in doubt, give it Das Boot. If the ball is in your box, it might be better to just clear it downfield than to pass it out. You don't want to turn the ball over so close to your own goal. Find the other team's playmaker. If you need to shut down a certain player on the other team, you can assign one of your players to mark him for the entire game or even just parts of it. Remember that your Right Back should guard someone on the opponent's left side and vice versa. When you are past the other team's defenders and have a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, use the finesse shot. You won't need power because you'll be in on goal. Make sure to get a shot off before the goalkeeper closes you down. Don't concede corners. Defending them is based entirely on luck, so don't let it happen if you can. Throw-ins are much less dangerous. -Corner Kicks- To play the ball short, just press the A button. To aim, use the Left Analog. Cross the ball using the X button. While your player is running towards the ball and preparing to kick, hold the Left Analog in the direction that you want the ball to curve. Tap the X button twice for low crosses and three times to keep the cross on the ground. -Free Kicks- While defending, press the X button to make the wall jump. The Left Analog will move the wall from side to side. Aim using the Left Analog. Pass the ball to the nearest player using the A button. For longer passes, hold the X button. For a powerful shot, hold the Left Bumper and you press the B button. To curve the ball, use the Left Analog while your player is charging the ball. If you have a player like Nakamura who has high accuracy, you'll be able to score from a variety of set pieces (anything within 35 yards). If you are on the right side of the goal, aim just to the right of the near post so that you are aiming to the side of the goal. Use the above directions to bend the ball into the goal. With enough practice, you'll become a master of free kicks. ***** viii. Fan Shop [fscs] ***** Points for the Fan Shop are obtained by completing challenges from the challenge mode. FAQ section [xxxx] ***** Q: What are the Classic XI and World XI? A: The Classic XI is a team of some of the greatest players in the history of the game. The World XI is a collection of some of the best players in the world today. Both rosters are listed below: Classic XI: Ravelli, Trésor, Beckenbauer, Facchetti, Rivera, Zico, Koeman, Boniek, Cantona, Völler, Sanchez, Leonardo, Hagi, Krankl, Baresi, Papin, Amancio, Pele, Gascoigne, Brehme, Carlos Alberto, Conti, Rufer World XI: Casillas, Terry, Bordon, Materazzi, Ferdinand, Scholes, Riquelme, Essien, Schneider, David Villa, Messi, Maatje, Toni, Frings, Lúcio, Cris, De Baer, Ronhaar, Eto'o, Diego, Ribéry, Puyol, Buffon Q: Can you explain how group stages work? A: At the beginning of the tournament, teams are placed into groups. Typically there are four teams to a group. Each team plays the other teams in its group (whether it be once or twice). At the end of the round robin, the top two teams from each group advance to the knockout rounds. The first place team in each group will play a second place team from another group. Those matches will make up the first round of a single-elimination tournament to decide the champion. Q: Can I create a player to use in the Be-A-Pro mode? A: Unfortunatley this is not possible in Fifa 08. I am nearly 100% sure that EA is fixing this in the 2009 version. Sorry. =/ Q: How do I earn points for the fan shop? A: I'm pretty sure I've answered this twice but you have to complete the challenges in challenge mode. Q: Is the Russian Premier League available in Fifa 08? A: Nope, sorry. I can't imagine why it was left out though. Q: Why is my team so fatigued in manager mode? A: Your fitness coach may not be at a high enough level. Consider upgrading him/her. You may also be playing multiple games a week if you are in a tournament. If that is the case, you'll have to decide which trophy is more important to you...the League Cup or the Champions League (or whatever else). It is a decision that many managers must face in real life (ask AC Milan). Q: How do I make a lob pass? A: Since the controls section isn't finished yet, I'll post the answer here for now. Hold LB while passing. Q: How do I create an elite player? A: You have to work through the player progression system, so you won't have a fantastic player immediately. Get your player a lot of playing time. With a few good match ratings and a highly-trained staff, your player will be making the big bucks in no time. You can also unlock certain player packs in the fan shop to gain more points. Q: What does the match rating mean? A: It rates the performance of your player in a particular match on a scale of 1 to ten. If your player had a good game, his match rating will be higher and he'll receive more progression points. Q: Where do my uploaded replays go? A: www.easportsworld.com Q: How do I improve team chemistry? A: You need to keep a starting 11 together for a long time and, most importantly, have success with them. Q: I played the demo and there was no commentary! A: There is commentary in the actual game. Martin Tyler and Andy Gray are calling the game in their ever-pessimistic tones. >_> Q: How come I must re-download the new rosters every time I sign on to Xbox Live? A: You haven't loaded the roster by the time you sign on. Just load it before you go into online play. Q: How can I put a created player on my team? A: You can't sign him immediately. You can go into manager mode to sign him. Q: How do I obtain points for the fan shop? A: You must complete certain challenges and achievements. Go through manager mode and win certain leagues, complete certain scenarios, etc. They're all listed under the challenges mode. Q: I cross the ball into the box but my players won't fight for it! A: Hold the L trigger to jostle for placement. If you're already doing that, just be patient. Q: What is the Coppa Nazionale? A: It's an Italian football tournament that you can participate in if you have a Serie A or Serie B team. Q: Why are some of your team names complete with accent marks and others are not? A: I had written this whole guide in Unicode, unaware that Gamefaqs only accepted ANSI. So I went back and deleted special characters until I could save the file in ANSI. The Turkish and Polish teams were causing the problems. Q: Why are the Dutch players fictitious? A: FIFA was not allowed to purchase the rights to the Netherlands' national team. The Pro Evolution series has exclusivity I believe. Q: What other systems is this game being made for? A: This game is out for DS, PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, and Xbox 360 Q: What are the best teams in the game? A: It's a matter of preference, really. Here are a few of the higher profile teams: Premiership: Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal Spanish La Liga: Barcelona, Valencia, Real Madrid Italian Serie A: AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Roma Others: Celtic, Rangers, Ajax, Bayern Munich, Werder Bremen, FC Porto, Benfica, Fehnerbache I've left a bunch of clubs out, I know. Q: Is there a UEFA Champions League? A: It is called the European Cup of Champions (ECC) because I don't think EA has the rights to UEFA. Same basic layout, though. Q: You didn't list my favorite team in the above Q&A! A: I'm sorry. The Blues are better anyway. :P Q: What is the Premiership? A: Barclay's Premier League. It goes by a couple different names. Q: How can I manage my created team in manager mode? A: You'll have to replace it with a team that is already in a league. When you create your team, it will be categorized under "Rest of World" I believe. Simply make the switch under the team manager menu. Q: Who is the best player in this game? A: I don't know. Kaka maybe. Q: I have an Xbox 360. My friend has a PS3. Can we play online together? A: I believe that you can. I haven't tried it but I'm almost 100% sure that it was possible in Fifa 07 and there's no reason why they should have taken that away. Q: I can't re-sign this player! A: Try upgrading your negotiator staff. If that doesn't work, you'll have to offer more money or consider selling him. Q: Does Fifa 08 have HD compatibility? A: Yes. Remember to flip the switch on your cable and manually change your display settings in the Xbox dashboard. See your TV manual for more information. Q: I just signed Kaka to my Real Madrid team! Can I use this team in other modes (besides manager mode)? A: You can export your team from manager mode to use in the kick-off mode. You can play with them in tournament mode as well, but you won't be able to play online with them. Q: What is a quick way to make money in manager mode? A: Sell your expensive reserve players. Q: I can't sign this player even though I offered $5,893,638,213,213! A: The team you are trying to obtain that player from might not have enough players on their roster to sell anyone. Another alternative is that you may not be at a club that is prestigious enough. Q: When are the playoffs? A: Typically you'll participate in in-season tournaments as opposed to a tournament at the end of a season. For some of these in-season tournaments, you'll have had to finish very high in the standings the previous year. The league winner is decided by who is in first at the end of the season. Q: Do I have to wait until the season is over to re-sign players? A: No. Go to the Player Contracts screen under the squad menu to re- negotiate player fees. ***** xi.
